He should stick to the 4 or 6 pot turbos - unless he's prepared for some big bills, as the rotary engine is a bit of an unknown quantity to your average mechanic.
I have a friend who specialises in these cars, and he does not recommend buying one. They generally drink oil, and are not particularily fast, they just rev to 15,000 so it gives a big BHP figure on paper. They can look great though, and are inexpensive - but the 300z is also in this price range as well as Celica etc. - so I'd tell him to consider them instead.

ALL ROTARY ENGINES USE OIL. SO DOES THE M5 AND COSWORTH
the engine when you look into em and not all that bad, rotor tips are 30 odd quid each and theres 4 of em, the gasket set is around 350 quid,,,,,,,,there the housings that can get scored when they let go but not always the case
the 4 pot cosworth is a SHITE load more money to repair
the biggest problem on the RX7 belive it or not is rust
if you want a user friendly version the bin the twin turbos and fit 1 single one, that gets rid of most of the problematic solenoids and vacum hose problems they can have
ina net shell i love em and am SERIOUSLY considering getting one when the cossie is back onthe road,,,,,,, on and the engines are TINY so fitting em aint a issue either

thought all you raf people had to have good eye sight
its dont compare,,,,,,,,, the only reason people buy saphs is the same reason people have fat girl friends,,,,, its cause they dont think they can get beter or are worried about potential problems
ford sierra and ,,,,,,,,, well of that never had a mazda badge that could be a corvette or another luxury car,,,,,,,,,, a sierra will always been a old car before the mondeo
infact proof that the sierra is boring and dull, when i bought my saph my oldman ACTUALLY said hes impressed ive finally grown up and bought a proper car and put my family first
that almost made me put in on autotrader that night

RX7s are awesome cars.
Look like they should cost 5 times what they do.
Brilliant brakes and suspension from standard.
Interiors spot on too.
Engine is shithot, looked after its no worse than any other performance engine and cost a lot less to get rebuilt.
Most the issues and and bad press is cause owners and garages have no idea how to look after them.

PassionFord Post Whore!!
A mate has 1 and it does about 3 mile to the gallon. That said it looks good but i just dont like imports in general.
My theory is this why would a uk importer import a nice example when its going to need work doing on it anyway after the bumpy trip over here in a metal box.
A well respected traider up my way has loads of mint examples (or what look to be) but out the back of there show room is a load of battered evo's scoobys supras you name it and i mean proper fucked with full front ends mashed in etc.
2 month later there in the show room for top dollar and looking mint

Most of the ones that get put on boats normally come over with minimal to no damage too, the odd scratch.

They like that as he BOUGHT them like that, tons of traders buy crashed cars from Japan on the cheap, bring em over, fix em, and sell em for top dollar. They not on the HPI
Trust me, they dont get smashed like that on the boats, but its v.common to buy crashed cars and fix em...
