If you keep hold of the V5C New keeper section of the V5 like it tells you to then you'll have no problems taxing with that. Failing that get the tax reminder off the person you are buying it from.

You MUST have the V5, V5/C New Keeper Supplement or the Tax reminder. Without one of these 3 you willnot be able to tax any vehicle.

Ring the DVLA and tell them the situation. I did this last month with my car, gave me 1 months grace to get the paperwork sorted and the car taxed.
Fortunalty got the paperwork just before the xmas break and managed to tax it.

You need to visit a DVLA offfice and you can fill everything out there.. New owner form, tax etc etc.
Done this a few times as I kept losing paperwork when I moved..
They do charge about £15 I believe but gets it all sorted and car taxed
