Default Garrett GT30 Turbos

Hi all from New Zealand

I'm after a new turbo for my 1988 Sapphire and was wondering if anyone could give me some sound advice on exact product numbers for the GT30, what exhaust housing is best, prices etc, internal vs external wastegate.
I've spent a good hour or so doing a search for "GT30" on this site and could only find a few posts about them so i went ahead and made a new post
Originally i was going to buy a T34 but have since changed my tune and have been told a GT30 is the better option in the long run
I know my car isn't a 500 HP monster yet but one day I hope to have it around that figure so I don't mind having an oversized turbo for my car for a wee while.
Here's what I currently have...........

Bosch 803 Green Fuel Injectors,Ahmed Bayjoo Chip, 3 Bar Map Sensor, -31 Wastegate actuator. Pace RS500 Spec Intercooler,Bailey breather system, full set of Red Samco silcone water and boost hoses, K&N panel filter, Bailey DV-30 recirculating Dump Valve, Bailey Power Steering and Header Tanks, Group A head gasket, Mongoose 3" Stainless Steel Exhaust System
Koni Adjustable Sports Suspension front and rear, New Chassis Dynamics uprated springs front and rear, New Ferrodo DS2500 fast road/track brake pads front and rear and a Philloy Front Strut Brace.
The car is only running 18 psi of boost on the standard un-moddified T03 Garrett turbo

I know my current setup is pretty piss weak but I can't be bothered buying a T34 and then in a years time having to fork out for a GT30 or some such.
I'm pretty set on buying a GT30 unless the likes of you all knowing chaps change my mind
If anyone could tell me which GT30 would be the easiest to fit from "garrett's" website that would be a big help when it comes time to order one
http://www.turbobygarrett.com/turbob...ochargers.html

Thanks in advance guys n girls and sorry about all the 'noob' questions

Hello,

Without wanting to be the bearer of bad news, I'm affraid your current engine and specification is well short of being able to benefit from a GT30.

I would fit a 0.48T34 with what you have and then since you are not in the UK you will only have to buy an off the shelf chip for that setup and get it checked by your local tuner.(Assuming you don't have good mappers)

If you want to make full use of a GT30 then you need to consider a full engine rebuild and change of spec as I'm affraid what you have now would make the GT30 an expensive option that would give less performance than a 0.48T34 on your current engine.

Hi Karl, cheers for the advice.
Over here in New Zealand we don't have anyone at all that has either the experience or the software to do live mapping on the Cosworth engine.
I can put it on the Dynapack and have it dynoed, all the tuners can do is adjust fuel pressure, boost and tweak the C0 screw though
Remembering there's less than 50 Ford RS vehicles in New Zealand
Japanese cars are all the rage over here and most young people don't even know what a Sierra is when I pull up at the lights.

Is there possibly another type of Garrett GT turbo that would be better suited to my engine specs or is a T34 the only way to go for what mods I have?

0.48 T34 is a fantastic turbo and in my opinion is the best turbo to use on a cosworth YB with 803 greens and standard engine.

It will with the correct map be exceptionally reliable, punchy, lag free and make a nice 350bhp!!

Yes mate, it's a flat black 2WD.
It's got "Zwart" written on the tag ontop of the slam panel, which I think is Dutch for Black.
I've heard that Black was quite a rear colour for the 2WDs but nobody has ever told me how many were made with 100% knowledge on the matter

Oh and yea NEw Zealand is a great place to live, nice beaches, sunny weather and it's well above 20 degrees down here at the moment.
The only downfall with New Zealand is owning a cosworth down here and the lack of tuners and parts

Another huge bonus is its a direct fit, no fucking about, wheras all GT Series turbos will ned adapting to fit barring the hybrids of adapted GTs that people like AET make.

Agree with Karl, a .48 T34 on greens running a good bit of boost (25psi?) makes a nice motor

I had it on the dyno about 6 months ago and these were the results.
I'm not sure what the graphs mean entirely so perhaps you 'tuner' types can see where my car is lacking (other than in Horsepower )
Could you give me a full product code for the T34 mate as the turbo places never sell the T34 for Cosworths over here and when I've approached them in the past about getting a quote for one they've always wanted the full number, not just what I told them (a Garrett T34 with a .48 housing)

Sorry to bump this again lads
Could someone give me the full product number for a T34 that I could take to my local Garrett distributor and order one?.
At the moment I running the standard T03 unmodified turbo with a full Mongoose exhaust system.
Another question, can my standard internals engine handle 25 psi like Karl and Itsmeagain suggested?(I'm not questioning their knowledge, just trying to clear something up ).
All I have is a Group A head gasket, other than that the engine is stock standard and has just ticked over to 80,000miles

Cheers again

Cheers Damo
I've considered buying from the U.K and shipping it over but with the price of shipping and the fact I can get a good discount if I buy it in New Zealand has twisted my arm.
Even if I told the Turbo supplier that the turbo I wanted was from and Escort Cosworth with a smaller housing they'd still me miffed.
Bearing in mind I think there's 6 Escort Cossies in total in New Zealand and all the ones I know of are running the original turbos.
Hence the fact that nearly all the turbo retailers and repairers have never worked on any Sierra or Escort turbos as nearly all of them still have their original turbos still

I wish it was that easy mate , believe me I've tried.
Even the "official" garrett distributor in New Zealand is trying to tell me that there's no such turbo and he's phoned Garrett Australia and talked to some chap whose been with Garrett for 22 years of something as he hasn't heard of them either
So what I'm after is a Garrett T34 or is it called a Garrett T3/4 or something similar?
Obviou;sy I know that us Ford guys just call it a T34 but theses guys down here in New Zealand only have eyes for Japanese Turbos

Would a GT3071R, 0.50A/R, 56trim with 0.63 Int WG exh. differ very much from a T34? The hp capabilty should be in the same region? Although better spool.

Edit: If you buy a Innovate wblm lite XD1+LC1 or LM1-kit and make logs of your engines performance at say 1 bar boost with a turbo like this, maybe you could NMS taylor you a chip? Obviously you would pay for it and maybe it would require more than one eeprom being sent over the oceans, but freight should be an expensive issue.

Can't help you with the turbo, but 'zwart' is indeed Dutch for black.

I'm in the process of fitting a Garett GT2871R dual ball bearing turbo to my Escort Cosworth. We had a little set back in tuning (Autronic SMC with 550 cc/min injectors) but should be finished soon. This turbo is good for up to 400hp and spools up much fatser than the T35 with a .48 housing (my previous turbo). For the small tracks and autocross events I do here in Montana the T35 was just too laggy.

Well that sounds like a good alternative. I would deffo go for something like this for that hp. The T34 is after all a old relic today, and i cant see any reason to persist with these oldies.

To get the GT28716 to fit I used these parts from ATP Turbo here in the USA

GT2871R turbo with T3 housing http://www.atpturbo.com/Merchant2/me...egory_Code=GRT

ATP Internal Wastegate http://www.atpturbo.com/root/releases/release103105.htm

Oil Return Adapter http://www.atpturbo.com/root/releases/release112205.htm

As for fabrication, new coolant lines for the turbo had to be made and the V-Band flange needs to be welded to the exhaust downpipe. As for tuning and such I can't help you out there since I'm not too familiar with your local tuners

T34 .48 is the best option here for drivability and reliability i would dispute the 350bhp figure quoted though more like 330bhp on your setup at 25psi.Your other option is the same turbo but a .63 housing incase you want a future upgrade as you suggested, this with suitable injectors would give you in the region of 380bhp,more than enough for a rwd Sapphire imo because you are seriously getting close to no reasonable grip.Plus any more power would need bigger brakes aswell!

I would dispute your dispute, as 350bhp is easily achievable with the correct mapping on this turbo .

In fact, with different injectors (light blues), Damo V achieved an engine dyno confirmed 375bhp on this type of turbo .

But I have to get the car through its MOT (just niggly bits I have to sort out within the next month), after that, I may do something with the wheels, then possibly greys, depends on my bank balance

Did you have greens before then? cos mine basically atm goes upto 1.9bar then drops slowly to 22psi for the limiter, but does hold around 26psi for a while too

If you did have greens before, how much difference can you notice?
