Default Radar detectors to be made illegal

Heard on the news this morning, apparently motorists "mis-use" radar detectors so some do-gooder wants to ban them and make them illegal.

How exactly can you mis-use a radar detector ? By making coffee with it

i doute they could make them illegal as the goverment say that speed traps are only in "blackspots" so all the companys have to call them is blackspots detectors, and who would ban something that detects where blackspots are

been saying this for ages chap- they won't be able to ban the GPS based ones anyway- they would then have to ban all sat-nav based products too, as you can store info on them

i personally dont see how they can ban them... i mean they are there to detect accident blackspost and make you aware of the speed at which your traveling! they dont intefere with anything.. and the use of them could help to save lives...

They did used to be illegal as they intercept the signal from the Gatso/traffic cop (as you are intercepting information) but a stated case a few years back stated they were not.

The GPS systems do not intercept any signal so no probs there. Guess some numpty is trying to get them banned again.

The government even said a couple of years ago that Radar Detectors WEREN'T illegal for some law or other so they will have to change that law before they make them illegal...

Jammers are illegal however...

No there not - Jammers aren't currently illegal in themselves and owning one does not get you in trouble. HOWEVER, if it can be proved that you have perverted the course of justice or prevented a police officer from carrying out his duty with one then you can be had up on this. Its a grey area - and only a few cases have been heard on these - but they have to prove that it was the jammer that made their equipment fail and not a fault in the equipment itself.
