a very true statement.. I was actually shocked by how much they drink fuel..

whilst at Bedford trackday, my mate in his EVO 8 fq400, had to fill up 4 times...

Mine ran faultlessly for the year I had it.

Check that the battery terminals are on tight from time to time they come lose and the car cuts out leaving no fault code.

Standard brakes are dire. There are options on the www.lancerregister.com site. Two piece discs that remove the warp issue.

Keep an eye on the oil level. Mine never moved but its a good idea to see if his is the same.

They get sticky actuators because the water drips in from the bonnet vents and rusts the actuator up. this results in slow boost response at best and at worst over boost issues where the car will momentarily cut out then come back in.

Best cars ever

Not much to look out for really, if the car's looked after it's bulletproof!
The clutch is the only thing to watch out for & as you said the discs.

But that's wear & tear, saying that i've had mine for almost 2 years & the clutch is still sweet.
I have changed the discs though.

If you go on the link given above (lancer register) you can downlaod the tme buyers guide which is awesome.

If you have any other questions just pm me mate & i'll help you as much as i can.

Gareth...

A cossie aint reliable above stg1 IMO...as its very rare anyone actually looks at the major checks when converting to stg3......all they do is bung the off the shelf chip and greens and 3bar then boost it to 25psi..job done NOT!!!

Default problems

If the rear end makes noise on cornering, rear diff needs a service.

Had a couple with transfer box problems, but otherwise all reliable.... Japanese what more can you say!!

Rear diff noise on full lock could require the diff replacing (expensive) but it could also just need fresh oil and a bleed through to be quiet again. My dealer bled and replaced the rear diff oils for free.

Jap cars came with no real rust protection - rear quarters can go early. Best to get some protection done from the oldtimer fans - a full clean, wax and seal.

Obviously look carefully for accident damage - it should drive perfectly any hint of pulling, wobbliness is not a good sign.

Tyre wear, service intervals, and petrol are the main costs, as long as the rest is fine. Great fun to drive though.

Evo specific parts are extremely expensive - but there are many good specialist breakers so getting parts on the cheap is not too hard. Tuning is also not expensive.
