An F1 car weighs fuck all so there engines are brute BHP with loads of RPM...give them a shorter rev range and more torque then getting the power down would be difficult......
My Ferrari has about 220ft lb and 320bhp feels fucking flat TBH but then its a F1 style car really aerodynamics and nigh on 180mph so more meant for figures to impress top end.
My Escos has 320bhp at present but i reckon 350ft lb torque and beleive ME torque wins everytime..its brutal compared to the Ferrari and both weigh the same ok it would only pull 160mph but who cares?
If your a motorway driver you need BHP if your anything else you need big torque

put it this way
there are 2 cars one with 250 hp 350 torque and one with 350 hp 250 torque both race both pull off at say 2000 rpm the one with the higher torque is gonna pull away at first and feel alot quicker than the higher bhp car but when the higher bhp car gets into its power band its gonna start taking over
both cars race again but this time the higher bhp car revs it to 4000 rpm into its power band the higher bhp car is gonna win
so if you have loads of torque you can drive like a fanny and still win races but the high bhp car is a total diffrent beast you need to know how to drive it and get the most out of it

It´s wrong to say that bhp is speed and torque is low down grunt. It might be the case with most roadgoing vehicles, but it´s not a technically correct statement.

The reason your Ferrari feels flat (in comparison to your Escos) is that it has a lower torque than the Escort.
What that means is: To achieve maximum performance from the Ferrari, you'll have to keep it in its power band; i.e. be in the correct gear to keep your revs up.
Your Escort has more driveability, with its fat torque, but it is the power that will control its top speed and rate of acceleration
Maybe a better demonstration would be to put your Escort engine in the Ferrari.... the acceleration rate will be the same: mathematics & physics demand that they will!

theres no substitute for cubic inches (as the yanks say)
a 6 litre sbc will have 350 lbs feet from 1500 rpm to 6000 rpm (prob peaking at over 450). this means that the *speed* increase of the car is a factor of 4:1 in any gear whilst still in the useable torque band of the engine.
a smaller engine even if turboed cant compete with this and a cos might acheive this over say 3500 to 7000 rpm (2:1 increase in the speed of the car). the YB might actually produce more horsepwoer *at its peak* than the sbc, the area under the graph as someone said earlier is a much more relevant statistic however. oh and you can get an ally sbc with gearbox all new for the price of big mac.
