Possible immobiliser problem??

Possible immobiliser problem??
For no reason the car will just cut out, then turn over but not fire up. Had to get the AA out last night and got it towed after he checked it. He says it's either the coil or the immobiliser.
Anyone had probs like this that turned out to be the immobiliser?
