Escort Cosworth GGR 335...HELP PLEASE>>>>
Hi....
Bought an Escort Cosworth a week ago and has not missed a beat...Last night started missing/boost cutting under hard acceleration...
I discovered there was less fuel left in the tank than i thought ( unless half a tank is 35 quid now!!!) so I am thinking as its got a high pressure fuel pump I might have got air in the system....So my question is how long would it take to clear if this is the case??
Any other thoughts would be appreciatied..does the GGR 335 conversion still have over boost protection and maybe this is cutting in...it just feels to soft to be missing...
As alway thanks for all ur help guys....
Cheers Malc

It should clear any air out just with a fresh tank of fuel, the air will get pumped out/through the fuel return. If it keeps missing on boost it may need new plugs or a setup/checkup to make sure the boost is ok etc..
Take it into GGR for a service maybe!

No mate it's fuel surge!! I bet it will do it with about 1/4 tank hard acceleration and also cornering!! Mine does exactly the same. It's something to do with the fuel pick up- I haven't sorted mine yet!! Just keep it full!!
There is no overboost as I've seen over 30 psi on mine!!! (actuator pipe blew off!!)

HI...
Kev, actuator pipe blew off
It has only just been serviced , had new pugs then so that should all be ok...I am sure its got something to do with the fuel level. The gauge said half full but i got 35 quid init so must have been pretty low. I have only done about 5 miles since filling up and its still missing. Kev how long did urs take to clear after you filled it up...
Thanks Malc

Hi Mike....
I put Optimax in it so think that should be ok...
Just seems funny how it started on low fuel but has not gone away when filled up, not good.
I will check the plugs, it drives me crazy having to check these things just after a service
Thks for your help...

It could have dopne something like blown a vacuum hose off the MAP sensor (it's a large turbo model yes?)
Those plugs don't sound suitable for a stage 3 cosworth! I've never heard them recommended before anyway!

Malc,
They should have some sort of number on them , whip one out and have a look. However, under no circumstances give the car ANY full throttle acceleration until you have checked this, as you could melt the plugs / engine .
The standard Ford Escort Cosworth plugs are NOT suitable for this power level if this is what they have put in. Get them to swap them for the Motorcraft AGP071s, they are a lot cheaper as well and can cope with sustained 2 bar of boost no probs (I run these in my own car). They will probably try and tell you they are not suitable, but the ones they have put in won't take the heat level of your conversion, whereas the 071s will.

I.E.
Standard Engines (220 BHP) a, b & c plugs are OK but X is best choice
Stage 1 (280-310 BHP) d & e plugs are OK but Y is best choice
Stage 3 (310-360 BHP) f & g '' '' '' ''
Stage 4...........and so on etc. etc.
I dare say that there will be some plugs that will fit into all OR most catagories, like the NGK 9's, but it would be most helpfull to know what plugs we "should" be using for a givin power level

Mike,
AGPS092P is a cooler plug than the PP8 and used on a GGR 335bhp conversion.
NGK 9's and C57C are to cool for the run in a run of the mill stage 2 <350bhp ish conversion, and its a waste of money IMHO.

JMC,
. Actually I have his mobile and home number, so he's NEVER engaged to me .
I haven't run a low power Cosworth since 1995, so wouldn't be familiar with plugs used for less than 400bhp , and as I said, the 071s are cheap as chips and suitable for all conversions (apart from EECIV), so have never investigated other Ford plugs.

Rich, Cool plugs also cause poor running in standard ish motors when running at below normal running temp and its just over kill at the end of the day + they are not cheap. From what I read on here everyone wants what Mr 1000bhp has in his car, so its not always good for his typical stage 2. Who told you that
Mike, I know you have you big tart. 1995, that must give you a god like status if you have not been below that power for all that time . Post come today?

Hi Mike..
I have just had the plugs out and they are DENSO+++++ PK20PR-P8 set to 25 thou...
They looked like 100 mile old plugs and clean as a whistle..went out in car afterwards and can not take full boost without missing... I am not going to piss about myself not worth it...I am going to see Karl or Mark (depending on who can fit me in when) and go for a proper 350 bhp in the process off fixing this problem.
SO if i were to change the plugs are a set of AGP 071's going to be ok for that level of tune...also how do i oda from you mike, can i do it over the phone??
Thks for everybodies help today, all pipes still on ok, so i think it must be electical (i hope, famous last words!!!)
