Default Tom Tom...which one??

Would you go for a proper Sat Nav package, or would you just go for the mobile one??

Its my xmas pressie but not sure which to go for, thinking maybe the proper package is best BUT I KNOW I wont carry it around with me, so if I go anywhere its going to be in my car, just worried about the scaly tw4ts breaking in the car for it, So would you say it was better to get the mobile one??

i've got it for my moby phone. works really well and you only need a small gps receiver to bluetooth to.

as said, easier to take away with you so it doesn't get nicked. do not leave any sign of it in the car though, or you will have your windows broken for nothing

There was a thing on the other night, I don't know whether it was Fifth Gear or the Gadget Show, but they were reviewing them. They reckon the TOM TOM ONE is the best on the market.

of course they will, but you're less likely to leave that in the car than a navi device - don't you think?

500 seems most popular choice. What extra features does the 700 have?

500 has all those features, i think the 700 has more diskspace (which in all honesty isnt really needed!), and the processor is slightly faster.

Tomtom 300 500 and 700 are all based on the same chip set. The 300 has no bluetooth, the 500 does have bluetooth, and comes with major routes of europe. The 700 is the 500 but also has a built in harddrive, which has all of western europe in street level detail built in.

The ONE is slimmer, uses the same software as the others, but uses a far better GPS chipset. It locks on very quickly - u can even get a signal indoors. It also has bluetooth, but this can only be used for handsfree mobile operation - and not for PLUS services as with the 500 & 700.

Tom tom mobile requires either a Symbian or Smartphone (Windows Mobile) mobile phone. U then need a bluetooth GPS receiver to actually receive the sat signal.

If your not intersted in Europe, then the ONE is easily the best - if u do want Europe, go for the 700.

I use My BT reciever with both my PDA and my Mobile, which i have maps of all of europe on. The BT reciever is mounted in my car, hardwired where it cant be seen. If im going on a jounrney, i'll mount the pda. If i just get caught out somewhere, i simply launch tomtom on my mobile - which is always with me - awesome kit
Rick.

Just to add. Consider using Route66. Its PDA / Symbian Mobile based but its free traffic updates and recalculates your route on the fly according to new traffic information! - Something you have to subscribe to on tomtom!

Welll how's this for a Tom Tom nightmate....

the other week a few of us attended a Prodrive day in Warwickshire for the Fiesta ST.... the night before we stayed in a Premier Travel Inn...... the Tom Tom got us to about 2 roundabouts before our planned destination.... so after having sommat to eat, we "consulted" Tom Tom for the local points of interest cinemas.........

Right, so we jump in the my car armed with Mark's Tom Tom and head off 25 miles to our cinema..... Keith was getting giddy, he really wanted to see Saw II......... Ozzy promptly told us..... "you have reached your fucking destination..." only thing was.... our destination wasn't built yet......

So we sacked Ozzy and opted for the more understandable John Cleese.... Well now, Cleesy took us to the middle of a housing estate telling us that we had indeed reached our destination..... "now get out of the car and walk....... you are on your own now" Yeah, we would have been, nearly in the centre of Birmingham!

So after getting fed up with trying to find somewhere to Park in Birmingham that wasn't somewhere I would get back to my car to find it wheel less, seatless and probably car less....... we drove back to the hotel.....

..... less than 2 miles from the Travel Inn...... coming in from the opposite direction...... we passed.....

a SHOWCASE CINEMA!

So from now on...... I shall use my trust AA Atlas, Multimap, AA Route Planner and do research on Yell.com to find my "points of interest" before I set off in future!!!!!!!

kim just get the mobile one. ive got it on my nokia 6680and im well happy with it. cost me Ł45 for the gps reciever and Ł26 for a 512meg card which leaves you loads of extra space. as far as maps the software comes standard with pretty much everything you will need in this country. if in the highly unlikey event that the map cant find some stupidly out of the way little back street then you can just download the detailed citymap there and then with your phone (ive never had to do this though as its pretty detailed anyway and can pinpoint my house within 10 yards )

if you get the gps and card drop me a pm and i can probably help with the software you need

dont think cheaper ones are the same.. they use different mapping software and look different as well.. IMO tom tom has the best looking maps and they do keep them upto date.. theirs loads of poi (points of interest) places you can download for free, dont just rely on the ones supplied..

ive got loads like pizza hut, mcd's, bp, shell etc on mine
