Default Heavy broadband user...which ISP?

Hi there, im just wondering what sort of package and ISP's HEAVY internet users are on...

basically im with Wanadoo at the moment but only on 512k BB...however their service has been EXCELLENT!

BUT i have been sent a letter telling me ive been using the net too much (downloading over 40gig a month for 3months now lol) so more than likely gonna get kicked off soon lol

so im looking around for other deals but need a bit of help to pick the right deal...

my main needs are:

as fast connection as possible
not exceeding £35 a month
no download limit
a reliable service with very rare downtime

i have tried the telewest service but they are unavailable in my area

what else do u recommend?

philc do pipex offer unlimited downloads?

Mr.Manchester i see the fair use policy applies...just had a qqucik skim read of it...is it basically saying download as much as u want off peak and then take it easy on peak? say if i like to leave the computer downloading night and day lol

No caps with pipex, think you will find they can all pull the plug if they feel your taking the piss though. My pc is normally on 24/7 downloading something or other with no problems

Dont go pipex, if your a heavy user they "manage" your speeds, in other words they cap.

They tried it on me so i cancelled

Now on ukonline no problems at all

on 8mg line actual speeds works out to 5mb down and 80kbs upload.
This depends on how far from the exchange you are, closer the faster!

this is what ive down/up loaded since i joined:

DU Meter Monthly Report

Period (Month)........Both Directions
September 2005........38.97 GB
October 2005 ...........267.57 GB
November 2005 .........331.27 GB
December 2005.........169.14 GB
havnt had any problems and my line only went down once when they tried to increase my speeds!!

ECLIPSE Excellent service with a good customer/tech desk service as well. Had one outage in 3 years and a couple of minor blips only.

Beware Tiscali Unlimited broadband.

I am on their 2Mb unlimited service, but I was recently sent this e-mail saying that they were going to limit my downloads if I continued with the amount I was downloading.

Dear Customer,
This email contains important information regarding your broadband account.
Your broadband Internet usage has been highlighted as exceptionally high
during peak periods and is affecting the service that we provide to other
customers.
All of our users have the right to an acceptable quality of service, and
to ensure this Tiscali employs a Fair Use Policy. You may upload and download as you wish outside the peak hours;
however we ask that you are considerate when using the internet
during the peak period.
If you do not reduce your usage during these peak times we will manage
your usage during these periods. This means that you will share
bandwidth with other heavy users during peak times instead of
sharing bandwidth with normal users.

Now... I am only ever going to be at home during the peak period. At work all other times. So when I am only ever gonna be online... during peak periods. We'll see what happens...

Just checked my Tiscali usage...

Oct: Upload: 400Mb. Download: 2,300Mb.
Nov: Upload: 2,865Mb. Download: 10,700Mb
Dec (so far): Up: 1,470Mb. Download: 9,600Mb.

Pretty high I guess. But we are 3 blokes sharing a house, so there's always something we wana download.

I have never had problems connecting. Always connects straight away. Was on 512k service before the 2Mb. Maybe your line is poor quality? and it has trouble establishing a connection?

cant really comment as such as i'm with telewest, on a 2 meg service, just waiting for the "free" upgrade to 10MB.

if anyone else is on telewest waiting for the free upgrade, the progress page is here.

Good luck in finding a good 'un!

only ones running ADSL, ones running standard ethernet use ntl/telewest, thats why its not available everywhere, as its their own bespoke infrastructure.

I absolutely and wholeheartedly agree, but I'm slightly biased!

We just won the "Best Broadband ISP" award at the PC Pro Awards ceremony, which is nice!

Correct young skywalker!

Hence why ADSL is very limted because of the BT exchanges nearby (Mine only handles 2meg MAX) With cable it's new, upgraded and much more capable of handling more speed/traffic Hence why i've got 10meg from ntl (Is limited to 75gig a month but that's more than enough for moi)

SMIT, people like Bulldog, Wanadoo and many others are now putting their own kit in BT exchanges (local loop unbundling it's called) to bypass the middle man. So, provided you are close enough to the exchange, AND, in an area where there is demand, anyone can get high speed adsl without new cable being laid.

PS: Since we are talking about awards,my company won the "Best software application" in this years' ISPA awards

1 word:

NTL

Unlike the others here, you don't have to swap phone companies to use their service, cable is quicker, and it's nowhere as dear. Plus you don't have to have cable TV service to use it.

Only thing is to check for NTL access in your area.

ive never had this and mines usually on 24/7 downloading, never had any issues with pipes, signed up for 512 adsl in early 2003, has been perfect service and was recently upgraded to 1mb for free. cant complain. probably pricey thesedays at £23.50 per month though
