yes blocked matrix sounds likely, would be best to change it but it's a little awkward

+ and wait for spring imo

Probably is the matrix.
Does the car have a little crappy plastic shut off valve before the matrix?

IIRC there are two pipes running through the bulkhead, one going in and one coming out, when the car is up to running temp these should be very hot to the touch, the same as the pipes from the rad.

the mk4 escort dont have a heater valve, the mk4 fiestas, pumas ect all had them, ive sold about 30 this week , not a design fault though honest

on the mk4 when the heaters pack up its nearly ALWAYS the heater matrix is blocked, enjoy a wet footwell

take off those pipes at the bulkhead stu get a hose if you have and a jublee clip wack it on then hose it thru await the orange water
was gonna suggest that but if it's REALLY fooked it could split into a million peices and spill nasty rusty water onto the floor and rot straight through rendering it a write off

well it could make a mess anyhoo

Stu, sounds like the heater matrix is either blocked or just fucked internaly.

Get a new one, not too expensive but allow couple of hours to fit.
