Porsche engines..?
I guess porkie is the best one to answer are they good as an ever day usable car..?? Are the engines quite good or do you have to stick with buying one under a certain millage..?? Not looking at anything with a turbo as it would be the "fainces" everyday car Looking at 2 of these

Stunning looking car that
I know a couple of people who have run them as everyday cars doing absolute starship milages (including a mate who used one to commute from near london out to cardiff and back daily for about 6 months!) and not had any problems at all.

Unfortunately NOT as bombproof as you would think.... problems with rear main oil seals is the common failure on early 996. Its NOT a mileage thing either and have heard rumours that you want one thats been driven properly, ie HARD as they seem to be ok and its the pampered ones that have problems. Blocks also have problems...
BUT still an awesome awesome car. 996's are amazing value now, the values have been CRUSHED with new 997 out They are special cars in that thrill you on every drive and yet are totally usable everyday.
GREAT cars, all time That was has a nice spec as well but is overpriced. My mate is selling his C4 convertable for less money!!!! I know this car very well and it is a wicked buy for the money. I'd get this if I were you.
Not great pics, and I know the converts aren't as good looking as the coupes BUT getting the roof down is soooooooooooooooooooooo nice. I will never ever have a garage without a convert of some sort in it! This is a better car to own!
Its got a lovely spec, let me know if you wanna test drive and I'll bring it over to you.
Not really liking my Skyline to be honest thinking I should have bought a 996 Turbo instead

Dunno, love the looks, even if it is the kingchav car Just not sure about the drive. Where as I just love Porsches full stop, the drive, the looks the sounds, the way you know they will always start and you can always give them death!
I'll have to give The Skybus more of a chance I suppose. Only driven it twice and for less than 20 miles in total!

996 is totally different. much more modern. Driving position, pedals and ergonomics are perfect in my opinion.

Can't beat the 930's but then I am biased.
Saying that having driven a 997 aswell I really enjoyed it over a 993 and 996 (non-turbo).
Conclusion, old ones ('89 models g50 box and hydro clutch etc) with are best for someone who really wants to feel everything and really work it themself without power steering and trick gadgets....master this and you can have bags of fun. On the other hand get it wrong and they don't forgive in a hurry with all of that weight in the back.
997 is best for comfort and bring back the gorgious old school wide curves and looks (that the 996's lack with their boxy design).
Just gimme a Carrera GT and I'd be happy with everything!

I know of a lovely 996 Turbo for 44k... or a real GT3 for £39
Personally though, I'd talk her into my mates 996 C4 cab, get it lowered on some BBS 19's and you will both love it

There's an ad in the Yorkshire Post today for a 944 described as "near concours" at £4995. Shame there's no bloody pics in that paper. Bet it's a nice car tho obviously not on the level of the cars mentioned above.

Engine wise agree with Porkie. Boxsters and 996's and even 997's can all suffer from RMS failure. The seal costs pennies, but the labour involved to change it is £000's. Even if it's replaced it will probably go again, it's a seal housing problem apparently(i.e. block).
Engines have been known to kill themselves too, due to cylinder liners slipping or intermediate shaft failure, causing the timing chain to snap, not good.
Other than that I know of no problems, and I use a Boxster forum a lot.
Wouldn't let the above put you off though, very isolated cases, although RMS failure is more common.
Edit: If you find one you want, any Porsche dealer will do a thorough inspection of the car for £150 ish, well worth it IMO. You'll have to get the car to them, but DO NOT use AA or RAC for this.
