Default computer question

When my laptop screen saver comes on, and then when the screen shuts of the Laptop seems like its working. The hard drive isnt crunching etc but the fan starts up and the computer gets warm in certain bit. Its like the CPU is been used a lot. Any ideas why it might happen? When im using the laptop like now with couple of programmes running the fans not working and only 5% of CPU is being used. Strange
