I would say the Shining, Thats what i did anyway and have enjoyed his books since,
As youve probably seen the film, so knowing the film carries you on the the book where you may be getting lost in the writing,
This will then pre educate you into his writing for his next books that you may read.

I liked the Jason Bourne series of books by Robert ludlum. Also got a couple of books by chris ryan, the guy that wrote the book about bravo two zero(andy mcnabb wrote one to) and I thought they where ok.

It all depends what you like though, I thought dan browns books where good but some dont like them.

The Talisman is a stunning book and prob one of my top 5
saying that insomnia is fantastic as well,

if you like stephen king also try his gunslinger series as they are well worth the read and got me through many a 12 hour sunday shift

Also one book you must buy is the choir boys by Joseph Wambaugh and if you don't piss yourself laughing out loudly i will give you back the money you payed for it, it was written in 1975 and my dad gave me his original copy but it did get reprinted in 2002

Have fun

Martin

The Shining is simply an all time classic.

Personally I like Wilbur Smith - one of my favourite authors.

I must spend Ł30 + a month on books - couldn't live without em.

Get the "Bachman Books". A compilation of some of Richard Bachman's (King's) shortish stories. Blew me away when I read "The Long Walk". Not horror but some of King's best work IMO.
I'm going to re-order it from Amazon now

I absolutely loved Insomnia (would definitely recommend that first), but The Shining was also pretty good...

I prefer Clive Barker to Stephen King these days, CB tends to churn out more surreal horror than SK, which I prefer.

Books I've recently had delivered:

David Eddings - "Mallorean" series (Guardians of the West, King of the Murgos, Demon Lord of Karanda, Sorceress of Darshiva, The Seeress of Kell)
Robert Jordan - "Wheel of Time" series (The Great Hunt, The Dragon Reborn, The Shadow Rising)
Robin Hobb - "The Farseer Trilogy" (Royal Assassin, Assassin's Quest)

There went another Ł50 of money I should have been saving towards a house! Will have to re-read the five books in the "Belgariad" series, by David Eddings, before I start on the Mallorean......plenty of reading to do yet!

The Talisman, just finished reading it a couple of weeks ago.

Starts slow, but once you've been past the first 50 or so pages, I couldn't put it down, awesome book.

The Shining - good book, read this one first!
DreamCatcher - pretty recent, quite a short read as well but still fairly good
Insomnia - good book, read this one second or third (after Talisman) - LOTResque but still very good
The Talsiman - long book, one to take your time over!
From A Buick 8 - relatively short, latest book out of the lot, not as good as his earlier stuff but has a bit of a good twist to it

That's about the extent of my book reviewing skills!

I'm just getting into reading Dean Koontz's stuff at the mo
