I've not used MSN since about version 4, I moved over to Trillian (which supports the MSN protocol, but without all the bugs and security-holes), and recently moved over to GAIM (thanks to using Linux in work, not Windows, so decided to try the Windows version of GAIM at home).
When someone tries to send me something that later versions of MSN supports (most common example is the handwritten-note thing that it supports), I get a message to say that someone tried to send me it, and it gives me a download-link to download the latest version of MSN (which I duly ignore)...
Hope that helps...

Im still on version 4 lol...
You get a message which says something like
xxx has invited you to a video conversation but your version does not support this. Please go to www, blahxxxblah, com to update your software to the latest version.
Winks, nudges and all the other fancy gizmo's show nothing.
