Default Wireless experts, internet question

At the moment I have a desktop comp, broadband is connected to that, I have a network switch that the pc is connected to with wireless access point, and the laptop has a wireless card.

What I what to do is connect the access point to the broadband modem and use the laptop without having the desktop and switch on. Is this possible????

I've got a Linksys Cable router and have never had any problems with it ! Linksys' online support is superb aswell if you do get stuck !
