Default FAO Skiing/Boarding people!!

Firstly where are you all off this year?

Secondly, does anyone do both skiing and snowboarding? How long did it take you guys to learn snowboarding?

The reason I ask is that I can ski very well and love it but also quite fancy trying my hand at boarding! I'm going on two skiing holidays this year so was thinking of using one of them to learn to board.

How many lessons did you all have? Should I take them beforehand or just have them on holiday on the real snow? I hated learning to ski so now I can do it well I am quite reluctant to learn boarding from scratch, but it does look great fun once you can do it!

Also, people I know in the past have had lots of lessons and been on a few holidays etc but they still all look pretty crap and fall over all the time

That and it will cost me a lot in lessons and time to learn beforehand

Help

Chamonix this year Boarding.

Phil I both ski & board however over the past 15 years i've done very little skiing as boarding tends to appeal more.

Its unlikely that you will see a benefit from having skiied until your boarding at an intermediate level you will then find the technical aspects of skiing can be tweeked and applied to boarding.

It can be very frustrating sacrificing hours of fun on ski's for the bumps knocks, time spent on your arse you'll experience whilst learning.

But its well worth it.

Main thing to remember: your boarding SO leave your tiger print skisuit and illuminous beannie's behind

Ooh i was going to post something like this actually.
The other half wants me to go snowboarding with him next year, but he's really good at it and i've never seen a snowboard in my life

Gareth - where did you do the learn in a day course thing? I want to have some idea of what im doing, but i can't afford to have loads of lessons, and I won't have much notice of when we're going as it depends when he gets leave from iraq, so a day thing would be perfect.

Also I have a real phobia of those lift things you sit on to go to the top of the slopes, is this going to be a problem as I hate going near them

Banff [Canada] this Jan

I used to Ski...then decided to board. Didn't have any lessons, went to Andorra right to the top and came back down. Within two days I was boarding very well

I wouldn't bother learning before you go as it hurts more when you fall over on indoor slopes [even on the snow]. Just get out there and learn yourself. Really is a piece of piss!!

I mush prefer boarding but Skiing seems to becoming more and more popular again

Have you been to Banff before John? Where are you staying in Banff?

Norquay (Banff local ski area is pretty good fun with a nice 1/2 pipe)

Sunshine village just kicks ass Its got everything, SO vast in size.

Lake Louise as per Sunshine

You'll have a ball Im extremely jealous

Great advice, I still think I will try and get some lessons in beforehand though as I don't want to waste the good slopes on holiday, could perhaps save a day's worth on holiday if I put the effort in beforehand on the indoor slopes. They don't hurt that much, I fell over lets learning ski jumps at Milton Keynes XScape last year

Plus the first holiday is in Lapland and they daylight hours are quite short there and I don't know how much is floodlit!

Second one is in Sweeden again but further south

going to a small place in france that is under used, and i'm not telling you where as i want it to stay that way

i tried boarding last year for the first time, after skiing for 5 years. piece of piss. could do heel & toe turns in an hour. learnt on proper snow, on quite a shallow hill, but too shallow and too slow makes it difficult.

I'm going to end up going boarding on both holidays at this rate as you all keep saying it is easy

Does it matter that I could never skateboard to save my life? Thats part of what has been putting me off

I've not been to Banff before, only Europe so far on a Winter Holiday.

From the reports I've been hearing about how much snow to expect I can't wait!!

I'm not sure whereabouts in Banff I'm going but I think its Lake Louise

ive skiied since a young age, but mainly on dry slopes
had a lesson or 2 on the dry slope for boarding (in orpington)
then went on my 1st snow holiday in the states and was doing blacks, diamonds, off piste and through the trees within 2 days

snowboarding is great fun and easy to learn.

if you want any gear my m8 owns this shop,

www.e-depot.co.uk

its all out of seaon stock basically, this years and lasts, all new just last season colours basically.

Going to Les Gets over christmas. Last year was really good as they have loads of blue runs that are really good for learning on. I am a skiing man but tried boarding last year. Its really hard as both your feet are trapped on the board....plus you get bruised in 2 places your arse or your knees, only 2 places you land

Still its good fun but not for me

Snowboarding is something i want to try done ski-ing a while back when i was over at sugar loaf mountain boston spent a week there lessons every morning and on your own in the afternoon kind of thing and had a great time and by the end of the week was a confident skier. Theres an indoor ski slope getting built in glasgow this now so going to go down and book up some lessons when it opens up might even try got up the nevis range this winter .

going to bulgaria with the family, and to austria with a group of freinds
Been boarding 6 years and it is not hard at all ,more 30% skill and 70% balls and in yer head .Its a confidence thing realy having the weight on yer front foot going down a slope aint natural and people tend to lean back, pick up speed and ditch it just relax its that simole
As all ski instructors say "the diference between a snowboard instructor and begginer is 5 days
