American HP to BHP conversion?

I was talking to a yank the other day about this and he made it confusing ( unsurprisingly ), but from what I gather BHP in American term's refer's to engine horse power and not at the wheel's. When they say "HP" they are talking about wheel horse power ( WHP ).

HP is the same as BHP when NOT standardised to DIN standards. (GERMAN INDUSTRIAL STANDARDS)
Nearly ALL european dyno and rolling roads give BHP in two forms/figures.
The normal universal method when torque and RPM are only used to
calculate BHP/HP and the DIN corrected method which takes air
temperature and barometric pressure into account aswell.
Wether or not its measured at the wheels or flywheel is irrelivant.

When we mention horsepower we usually refer 90% of the time the actual horsepower at the wheels. Most of us aren't interested in engine figures cause it just makes it sound "More" (You'd think the yanks would use this LOL). Plus when you race at the strip and say I have so-so HP..and you get your arse beat by someone with a lot less...you looks stupid for bigging yourself up. LOL. IMO...at the wheels is what matter.

do they qoute at the wheels figures though when they talk about standard engines? for example "my 1985 camaro iroc Z has the 190hp engine fitted"
Just read a post from a bloke with the above car claiming he wasted his mate's evo (dont know which variant but its 280bhp so could be any) and that power isnt as important as torque and thats why it will do 160mph

Pre-1972 US = HP (SAE gross) = engine on stand (i.e no exhaust or ancillaries as per an engine dyno)
Post 1972 US = HP (SAE net) = engine in-car i.e. flywheel power
