if youve never been one there's no point in going 250 go 125, ive been doing this for along time couple of mates are scottish and british champs so think i have pretty good knowledge all you'll do with a bigger bike is go out scare yoursell and then sell it start with the 125 if you can handel it keep it a year then move up to 250.

I reckon a 125cc would suite you pretty well, you are a good height and weight for one. I'd always recommend Yamaha as it's the only bike I have and will ever own, they are very reliable.
Here's my old YZ125, sold it earlier in the year as I quit racing for a while.

Man you need to wipe your chin
seriously, cheers for info! Think i'll only be looking at a 125 initially... im the sort of bloke that will only use the throttle in 2 positions lol! Im sure that will be ample for my needs
plenty of stuff to look at now though

Who's your British Champion friend's bigbobby?
Daveboy, I just read back a bit, seriously, you don't want to hop onto a 250cc 2 stroke with little to no experience - you will get hurt. I've rode all bike's from 85cc to 450cc 4 stroke's and 500cc 2 stroke's and I can honestly say the most fun is to be had on the little 125 screamer.

Billy Mac is still doing the British Championship and GP's. Billy along with a few other Pro's visit a motocross forum I use every now and then, Stu Flockhart also come's on.
Alan s1, the main difference from the road bike's and mxer's is the powervalve assembly, if a 125 road bike had one it would be a death trap lol.
Daveboy, I sold that bike for only Ł1600, that was dirt cheap considering the shit load of aftermarket part's on it, not to mention the fully tuned engine and bucket load of spare's. It actually make's me feel sick when I think about it.

About the 125 argument, iv'e riden a few 125's and find them too be a rite pain in the arse too ride, u are constanly chaning gears, always screaming them and not getting anywhere, they stuggle like hell when the tracks really wet and u start mud plugging, for instance on my 250 kx if it stars struggling u only have to drop 1 gear or somtimes u can just give it full throttle and it will clear up and start flying again, but on a 125 u got too atleast drop it 2 gears and opening up the throttle won't help, 125's wear out more aswell, for instance the pistons and ring service intervals on a 125 are 20 hours at very fast riding around 9,000rpm, but on a 250 u would only be doing about 7,000 on a very fast ride and the service interval is about 50 hours, this is parly to do with the fact that 125's only have 1 piston ring to get them to rev more, but this also makes them wear a lot quicker and u get a lot more piston slap, on a 125 u should replace both the ring and piston at the same time but on, a 250 u can replace the pison every other time u do the ring if the bikes riden properly with the correct piston used, also 125's always seem a bit less reliable than the 250's. if u want a good bike that's got more torque than the 125 but not as powerfull as the 250 the 250 four stroke are really good really nice too ride they give u lots of confidence and have a lot of engine breaking witch is really usefull, and the extra torque they give makes them so much nicer to ride than the 125's. 125's are nice in a way they don't tire u out asmuch as a 250 with is always ripping on ur arms, and 125s are good becasue they teach u good riding style and bike controll.
Like u said u want one for messing around on then i would get a 250 2 stroke since thery'e easyer to ride (apart from ripping ur arms off) more realiable, less maintenance.
And the thing about herting himself on a 250 the 125's have plenty enough power for him to hert himself on if u don't ride them propelly. so i doesn't make much differnce i started on a 250 yam and didn't have any problems.
So i would say get a 250 2 stroke or if u want a bit off an easier ride in return for about 15 less HP get a 250 four stroke. 125's are gonna be a lot harder to learn on i reckon and u won't have as much fun.
typical Hp figures
125 35-40
250 4 stroke 35-40 but more freindly to ride with better torque
250 2 stroke 50-60 fast but can tire u out quick they flipping fly when u got them singing around 7,000 - 12,000rpm
450 4 stroke 50 - 60 not as much top end power as the 250 2 stroke, but they make up for it in torque very rider friendly and nice engine breaking

Yeah www.mxtrax.co.uk
U will injure ur self eventurly i was ok for about a year untill i came of going over a jump i nose-dived badly bike landed vertically on the front wheel i whent over the handle bars bike came down on my back, knocked my self out, got run over, and tore the muscle in my shoulder and arm cound't move them very well for a week and it hert for like a month every time i lifted something. i also brused my ribes when they hit the handlebars, i came of a few months back aswell and ture the muscles down my thunb, luckly i havn't broken anything yet. but thats racing.
Here's a pic of the shirt i was wearing when i got run over (clue spot the tire tread u could tell what tire it was from it, it was a michiline m12)
But then if i didn't do this life would just be boring.

IT IS. at the mo im out of funds so i've given it up for a month or too, but practising is great fun, when u first clear ur jump when u first clear a jump and landing (the ones when u got to clear the lading or u will crash) its an amazing feeling. a bike is nothing like a car and at this point in time i do prefer my car but a bike is just instant power, and only prob is u got too be a fit bastard or u will never get n very well when racing, the amount of muscle i've gained from riding bikes is amazin, i when practising on sunday and my arms are still really acking from it. i will give u won bit of advise if ur gonna race its better to go all out and do it propelly than just race a few know and again or u will never improve to ur full purtential. Its the best thing i ever done the MX scene is so friendly if u join the right organisastion, i know have a about 20 really good mates from it. and the feeling when ur racing them i amazing u will do anything to get in front of them.

Here u go heres some pics of my first MX bike a 1994 YAM 250, pretty quick for its age, i just stuck a new piston and rings init, decals and new seat cover, and cleaned it up a bit, it's also got a kawasaki KX front number plate since the yam one's where ugly.
I bought it for Ł850, done it up
I had the front forks re-sealed, back shock fixed (leaking), fixed all the slop in the suspention bearings. spent a load of money on it. bloody thing was well unrealiable,
3 gears went in the gear box, fixed that with new parts and then 2 of them went, eventurly fixed that. then the bloody Con-rod snapped and went though the barrle, i repaired this with a new barrle, Conrod kit, Piston kit. and sold it for Ł900 after having it for a year, but it was a much better bike when i sold it, the bloke who tested it said he had tested 5 bike already from that year and my was the best condition and i was the fastest, but then i stripped it down and resprayed the fram, ECT for i sold it.
So this is the kinda thing u should be look ing out for,
1990-1994, Kx good but ugly, Yam good and good looking, suzuki shit and ugly, honda good and ok looks
1994-1998 honda very good and good looks, yam still good with good looks but suspention not the best, suzuki still not the best but lookin better, kawasaki looking a lot better still realialbe and good. 1998+ Kawasaki look very nice and very realibalbe, honda lost their handling with the alloy frame from 1997- 1999 and their 2 strokes where gutless from 1999-2002, Suzuki pretty good, and they look ok, yam suspention got better from 2000+ and their engine got more reliable aswell
Hope this helps if i was u i would get a 1994 yam or a 1996 honda 250 but obviouly get a bike on condition not make.

Yeah dave thorpe is the man reall nice and down to earth, he still does the ACU round down in devon and still wins. Iknow Jamie Squibb aswell he was the uk Freestyle champion about 2 years back but has let it slip a bit recentally. Good to see u like the BEST MAN OF ALL. RICKY Carmichael.
Kinda have lost a bit of interest init this year since i got into my car a bit more and lost my job about 4 months back ever since then, i havn't had the money and its been anoying racing becasue i've lost some of my bike controll and i always seem to do bad or fall off or break something, but i went practising this sunday and was the same speed still as the people i used to race against so i havn't lost it. as soon i get a job i'll be back into it.
