Need a new toy.... so thinking of one of these
I have however ZERO knowledge of them or even what models there are lol
Can anyone point me in the right direction? just after something to play with at the weekends.
Any good ones? or ones to avoid?

Aye mate there's a few try autotrader do national search. You want a jap built bike for parts and reliability. Suzuki RM, Kawasaki KX, Honda CR, Yamaha YZ are all great bikes and are pretty bomb proof my choice for first bike would be RM or YZ for a grand your gona get a pretty new one maby 3-4-5 years old depends on what its been used for. I ride the 500cc now but the 125's are like unguided missiles when you first get on them

Well worth getting into it mate, best thing i done, u do get anoyed with it at times it's a lot of money and u have bad days.
Yeah one of the big jap four would be the best, stay off the KTM and other euro bikes.
Starting out u will need about £1500 for a 1999-2001 bike obviously u want to buy on condition not age. saty of the old suzuki's pre 1998 2 storkes since these arn't the best but thier new stuff's pretty good, also u'll want atleast a £1000 per season for entries, breakages, tyres ect, Bikes are a piece of piss to work on if u get any problems just ask.
THERE u go the old yamaha in peices after the con-rod snapped and whent through the barrel. (work shops a bit messy)
IF u'r looking for realiability HONDA'S are dame good (especially for four strokes)but i find that KAWASAKI seem to be build a bit better with thicker metals for this the bike weighs about 5 KGS more but there a lot better with dealing with big crashes. if i was u and u wanted a four stroke i would go with a new as possible since its a four stroke try and get a HONDA or a KAWASAKI KXF 250 (SUZUKI four stroke RMZ 250's are made by KAWASAKI so one of these would do aswell). if u wanted a 2 stroke again the kawasaki 1999 are good the 2002 where good but the suspenstion was a bit shit but the 2003 - 2004 kawasaki are really good and the 05 kawasaki is a beast. Yamaha 2 strokes are pretty good even thought i never got on with the suspention, the honda 2 stroke are ok aswell but i would rather have a kawasaki over one.
Soon u'll be gaining some qaulity AIR

If u only got a grand u'll be after a pre-1996 Yamaha 250's where good then but ur best bet is probally honda's best 2 stroke ever was made in 1996 the Honda 250 2 stroke it had good power great handling very realible that's probally ur best bet, Suzuki's wern't the best back then unless their are look after well, Kawasaki's were very realibable back then aswell but looked a bit ugly
Here's some HONDA 2 stroke 250. GREAT BIKES
(they still had the steel frame back then and screwed up the handling for the first 3 years of making the alloy frame so it's a good bike to get)
Heres a pretty standard one

Check the bikes on Ebay
I sold my RM 250 (1994) on there for £780 It was pretty tidy with new plastics
Something similar will be plenty to start with Dont you reckon lads?
But best advice is make sure its locked up well & chained to the floor.
These things attract the theives like flies round 5hit

If u havn't ridden motocross bikes there nothing like it the power is instant not like a car where u got to wait for it, just instant power, i used mine on the road a bit and there deadly even not moving the throttle they still step out in corners becasue they are not smooth, just raw power.
