The waterpumps are shite for starters ,u need an after market pump an dmake sure the impellor is metal and not plastic !!! The original plastic impellor snaps and u dont know till its to late ,damage done ,u can get then for roughly £40 buddy !!
Headgaskets are very prone to going ,when engine is runnin listen for ticking nosies from engine ,(obviously louder than injectors) and listen hard as it may seem like the exhuast manifold gasket but 99/100 its the head gasket starting to go ,this can tick for months or even longer before water and oil are mixing ,very exspensive job to replace aswell if its in a gargage !!
Alternators are prone to going aswell ,the first signs of this is when u are very high up the revs and th ebattery light flickers and will go off when revs are dropped ,take one look at where the alternator is located and cry as its a total swine of a job !!!
Also when driving the car in second give it full throttle and the car will feel pretty flat then the secondries open up and the car starts to pull very well ,its like a kick and as long as the secondries are openin up properly u will feel the kick ,if not they are either choked with carbon or the imrc box located on top of engine right behind bonnet catch on front bank could be knackered !!
If i remember any more ill post
They are great cars to drive and i owned a minted st24 mondie and was totally faultless with me ,but i was part of the mondeo club and u see and hear of the horror storries with other cars !!
They are a lot of car for the money tho !!

I have 3 V6 mondeo's!
great cars but millsyscossie has covered the problems, the mk1 cars use vacuum operated secondaried which are fair more robust than the mk2 versions.
I use a V6 ghia X as a daily runabout rate it very highly.
make sure you change the water pump as the first job tho!!

i get on average 34mpg and i drive mine very mixed driving local and motorway
normally get about 230miles to a tank unless motorway all the time then can be more just depends how fast you drive.. stick to sub 100 and your laughing.. over that you can watch the needle physically dropping but then you dont own a v6 for mpg but the grin factor of that growl
love my st200 and not had one issue with it yet.. the horror stories are made to sound a lot worse than they are, just think about the thousands made and actual problems.. no worse than any other car.. TBH i see more RS's broken down on the side of the road than V6's
oh and the mk3 v6's apart from the 220 are still using the same v6 as the mk1 and mk2 so they cant be that bad can they

Agreed - i didn't buy my ST220 for MPG - i'm not fussed at all, although it is capable of impressive consumption driven hard around the lanes, my best (worst) being 146 miles to a full tank... But that was 146 fantastic miles of V6 roar...
What you said about the mk3's was true up until a few months ago - the engine has now finally been discontinued, and all V6's use the 220's powerplant, itself and evolution of the original 2.5V6, in a detuned form.
