Default Anybody know much about Tiscali Broadband?

Thinking about changing ISP. I'm on the old Freeserve set up, which is 512k uncapped, but costs me £27.99 a month

Reason I haven't upgraded to the now Wanadoo 1mb or 2mb lines is cos they are capped - which with me having three PC's now constantly hooked in is useless - the 2GB cap limit will be breached within a week!

So was just looking about and came across this;

http://www.tiscali.co.uk/products/br...ode=ZZ-NL-11GK

Says I can have 1mb uncapped for £14.99. Great methinks - then I see this bit;

Tiscali Fair Usage Policy

Tiscali's Fair Usage Policy is designed to make sure your broadband service is quick and reliable whenever you use it.

A very small number of customers use Peer to Peer or file sharing software, which constantly sends and receives video and other very large files, throughout the day. This type of activity uses a lot of bandwidth and can significantly reduce the speed at which other customers can access the internet during peak hours. Approximately 1% of customers use more than 30% of the available bandwidth during peak hours. We don't believe this is fair to the vast majority of our customers.

This fair usage policy automatically identifies the very small number of extremely heavy users and manages their bandwidth only during peak hours (being 6pm to 11pm Monday to Friday, and 12pm to 4pm on weekends and bank holidays), to protect the service for all our other customers. Outside peak hours, the use of the internet by these heavy users is unaffected.

We think this is the fairest approach. It protects the quality of service for the vast majority of our customers when they most use the service, while at the same time allowing the extremely heavy users to continue to send and receive without restriction outside of peak hours.

How do I know if I am likely to be affected by the Fair Usage Policy?

If you don't use Peer to Peer or file sharing software it is unlikely you will ever be affected by this Fair Usage Policy. If you do use Peer to Peer or file sharing software, all we ask is that you use this software considerately and send and receive large files outside of peak hours.

If you are affected, we will contact you by email to let you know that your usage at peak hours is excessive and is affecting other customers. The email will be sent to both your Tiscali email address and your contact email address (if different) and will contain simple advice on how to reduce your usage.

If your usage is still excessive, we will contact you again by email to ask you to reduce your sending and receiving of large files during peak hours. If your usage still remains excessive during peak hours, we will contact you a third time to advise you that we will be restricting your bandwidth during peak hours for the good of all other customers. This restriction will only apply during peak hours and there will be no restriction at other times of the day.

How can I manage my usage?

Simply ensure that any file sharing, sending and receiving of large file is done outside of peak hours.

What happens if you are affected by the Fair Usage Policy?

During peak hours, customers affected by the fair usage policy will share bandwidth with each other and will be separated from other customers. The amount of bandwidth available for affected customers to share, will be at least as much as for those customers unaffected by the policy.

The speed affected customers experience when downloading at peak hours will therefore depend on what these customers are doing. If they are all web-browsing and reading emails, they will experience normal broadband speed. If on the other hand they are using Peer to Peer or file sharing software they will experience slow broadband speed. Outside of peak hours, no restrictions will apply.

I am on a capped product, does the cap still apply?

We have removed the caps on all our packages except the £14.99 1meg (2GB cap). Customers can switch product at any time quickly and easily by visiting My Account on the Tiscali website.

This fair usage policy applies to all Tiscali Broadband packages excluding the 2GB Capped products.
So it says uncapped, but subject to a fair usage policy. But then at the end of it (see bit on bold) it says the £14.99 1mb service is capped to 2GB

So my questions are - anyone on this service can ell me how stringent they are with the "fair usage policy" (ie : I do use a P2P programme, but not really heavy like some - the odd tune here and there, but not massive DVD/video files or anything)

And is this service capped or not? No point changing to find out it IS capped and I have shot myself in the foot.....

I just saw the 2mb one

Yeah, I will think about that one, but I'm really just after saving money to be honest. Since most of the stuff my PC's get used for is net surfing/forums/MSN etc, file downloads is literally only less than 5% of what it's used for. And from what I have seen, going even 2mb does not greatly speed up web pages and forums (I could be wrong)

I'm just trying to halve bills where I can really...

It's annoying as I was looking at Telewest Blueyonder and they do 512k for £14.99, which is gonna be upgraded to 2mb at no extra cost. Then in the small print it says it's only a free upgrade to existing customers, not new ones

Nope, i did have a letter off them lastyear saying i had gone over my 15GB limit and therefor broke the fair usage policy

I checked via my account online to see i had used 5gb, so basicly i called them and said get fooked, bin my account and il be straight onto Oftel as i have printed my account details as evidence

Never heard off them since and all has been well

Just spoke to Tiscali, and they said I can sign up for 1mb uncapped (fair usage bollox) for £14.99, and the reference to a 2GB cap limit is on an old service you can't sign up for anymore - so I reckon I am gonna go for the 1mb. I know it's only £3 a month more for 2mb, but thats still another £36 a year saved, and all I mainly wanna do is reduce overheads where I can. Currently paying £27.99 a month so instead of paying £335.88 a year I will only be spending 179.88 - saving £156

Apparently I gotta get a migration code from Freeserve/Wanadoo now... Hmm...
