They were deemed illegal before a court ruled that as the carrier wave doesnt contain any message the Wireless Telegraphy act didn't apply.

Speed camera detectors could be made illegal in the UK. Auto Express has learned that the Government is looking at ways of banning laser detectors as they can give away the position of mobile speed traps.
A spokesman for the Department for Transport explained: "The police have the right to carry out covert surveillance. Devices that detect the signal given off by a mobile speed camera can give this away, and this could be seen to affect the police's ability to do their job properly." But he added: "We have no problem with those systems which only use GPS satellite technology."
Such gadgets, known as locators, are deemed acceptable as they can only tell drivers where fixed cameras are - and this information already exists in the public domain. In addition, Gatsos are designed to slow motorists at accident hotspots, and GPS systems help warn drivers that they're nearing a high-risk location.
Many European countries - including France - have already banned all detectors, but a similar move by the UK authorities could give weight to the argument that Gatsos are no more than a way of raising revenue.

By having GPS warning systems such as Road Angel and Snooper we are warned of a gatso which is supposedly at a blackspot. Fine, ew slow down and the Snooper we have in the car has done a much more effective job than any Gatso.
But in the same vein do mobile trap detectors not do the same job? It beeps to tell you there is a kunt with a laser gun around the (most often BLIND) corner so you slow down. And avoid a fine. Great. You do what the police tell you the guy is there for - slowing you down. But without a laser detector - how would you know to slow down? You don't. And thats how they like it. Cos you don't slow down, you don't see the hiding tw@t with his gun and BLAMO! You get a fine.
Nothing to do with safety, nothing to do with reducing speed, and everything to do with taxing the motorist YET AGAIN.
If it isn't anything to do with money then let us have the radar dectectors, because in proven fact these do more good at improving safety and lowering speed than any cop hiding in a bush with a gun.....

cant ya put the sensors etc begind ya grill or summit like that so it cant be seen.
The main unit telling ya the rozzers are there will be alright on the dash surely

To justify Gatsos as an accident-reducing tool is just pure pants. That's like saying that the Iraq war was because of WMDs and had nothing to do with oil. Another lie from our friendly-scum-sucking goverments.
