Cossie T5 gearbox rebuild - DIY or Pro?
our project cossie has got small gearbox troubles
the synchro is on the way out from 4th down to 3rd, or 4th up to 5th crunches in a bit.
is it a case of getting a rebuild kit from Gearboxman and doing it DIY?
http://www.gearboxman.co.uk/psmotive.html
i've looked inside a gearbox, and it scares the shit out of me but i'd give it a go. i'm a mechanical engineeer, how difficult can it be?
or would you take it to a Pro like Gearboxman? any ideas on cost? Gearboxman, pm if you read this and don't want to say in public.

PassionFord Post Whore!!
you will have much difficulty removing 5th gear
you will either not manage it or more likely you will brake 5th gear in your attempt to remove it.
pay bernie (who has the tools) to do it

They actually aren't rocket science to build, but as Craig says, you will break 5th gear without a special (custom-made) puller.
The 5th gear when it was available was Ł100.00, but is now obsolete!
We will not sell any that we have over the counter, as we need them for our own builds.

Price for this is Ł105.00 (labour) Ł175.00 (parts) which makes Ł280.00+VAT.
If there is any "hardware" damage, i.e. gears, the job would revert to full rebuild / exchange box price, which is Ł525.00+VAT

gearboxman,
thanks a lot for the reply bernie. for that, it hardly worth seems doing diy, although i would enjoy the challenge. but you would be able to easily spot any other possible problems, which might make it worthwhile in the long run.
i'll discuss it with my mates who share the car, and see what they say. problem could be getting the thing to england to do it though. i'll give you a call when we're ready to either buy the repair kit or book it in for a software rebuild
