Its around Ł500 depending who you go with , that would include all your lessons and the cost of your test
You will have to sit a theory test for HGV/LGV license though
Actually you could apply to he government for a grant to pay for the test mate as theres a big shortage of HGV drivers within the industry

Or get sponsored by a company and let them pay for it
I'm looking into this at the moment. Some friends of mine are agency class 1&2 drivers and they are coining it in, plus I'm setting up a new company doing logistics so need to do it anyway!

Same question to you Mark - any pointers, advise for those of us who haven't done it before?
I've driven 7.5 tonners on and off for years doing the odd bit of weekend agency work so I'm competent on a small lorry.
Thanks.

Cossie crew ,
You have to pass the theoy before you can start your lessons mate , but the place organizing your lessons shoud sort that out for you ( Mine did )
Dragon ,
The test for class 1 is much the same as 2 with the exception of you have to do a paralell (sp?) parking manouvre into a bay ( this is done at the test centre )
And you have to do a couple and un-couple of unit and trailer
Those are the only two differences between tests 1 and 2

A brief rundown on test elements would be really appreciated if you don't mind!
As I said some friends of mine work on Class 1&2 but they are ex-Royal Core of Transport so hard for them to give me an up to date expectation of how things are now as they were obviously MOD and it was 15+ years ago

Theory - I assume this is just in addition to what would have been taught in a car, i.e: how the Highway Code changes for you in an HGV - height/weight limits, where you can and can't drive an HGV, stopping speeds, weather conditions etc.?
Practical - Again I assume this is just an extension on a car as in, how to drive it and the do's and don'ts (prob part of the theory as well), and giving you some time in the lorry to learn how to drive it whilst being coached.
Test - Typically what will you be asked/expected to do?
Like with any test etc. it's nice to have an idea of what to expect and what is expected of you.
That do you for questions??

Ok with a theory youll be asked about speed limits for HGVs and their stopping distances , youll be asked about vehicle weights and axles , youll be asked about road positioning etc youll be asked about TACHO LAW !
Theres a proper truck theory test book you can buy which I suggest you do
Practical , the guy will be looking at your road positioning on round abouts etc , approach of speed coming up to hazards , he will be looking for regular mirror checks , he will be looking at how you read the road and react to it . He just wants to make sure you dont bully and intimidate people with your truck .
On the test its self when you do an emergency stop DO NOT LOCK THE REAR WHEELS YOU WILL FAIL !
The guy will also give you a little test at the end with regards to road signs like you had at the end of your car test

Well it sounds like I'm fooked then as I bought my driving license LOL
The theory is pretty much what I thought and tacho I've had some use of with the 7.5 tonners. I know it's changed somewhat now with the European Working Time Directive though but I'm sure I can learn it.
Practical - yep I can see all the logic there and why.
Test - well unless they have better brakes than the shite I have driven I should be OK!
Much appreciated information!
Now on to the others I was going to ask.....

Strangely enough I know of one fit one - I used to have a delivery driver who went on to be a class 2 agency driver. She's currently working for an aggregate company in Chertsey lol.
I thought it was quite unusual, but fair play, and she was the right sort of woman to do it (very broad sense of humour)!
There's also a not so great looking one the stomps around here in aggregate lorries and cement mixers (apparently ex-RCT as well) It does make me smile when I see a women driving a truck

from memory deano has told you all you need to know, on the test will also include things like air pressures, and safty coupling, suzie connections, colours of the air systems, twin and triple lines, scammel couplings, you need to be aware of a lot mates,
i didnt have to do uncouple-couple on the trailer , but the test was 50 mins from when we started, and the 1st thing is the parrallel park

Was thinking about doing this myself recently and was gonna go through these guys:
http://www.clear-stone.co.uk/
Haven't registered with them yet as I am also looking into the ins and outs atm
Any truckers out there actually tell me what a realistic wage I'd be looking at, and how many hours to expect, bearing in mind I'm new to the game, willing to do flexible hours etc?
Thanks

Cheers Pete - I just learnt something else helpful today!
As I said HGV work is not the prime revenue earner of the business at the moment; just something I may introduce later on so it's completely unknown to me at this point and only a consideration.
If I do HGV, I will do my class 2 or both and get one.
