Default Can i get an RS?

Hi,
this is my first post, im 18 and have been driving less than a year im just wondering can i get an S2?!

im not a boy racer and genuinely have a big interest in these cars,i know its not gona just get ragged around all the time.i want something to be proud of not just your ordinary novas etc.

my question basically is can i drive it?
i learnt in a 1.7 turbo and found it good, altho it was a disel so not really anything like.im pretty confident and im not gona be driving it fast everywhere.also cheapest insurance is gona be around 4000, unless anyone knows anywhere to get it cheap?
i know its gona be hard lol, just tryin to see if theres any way of doing it?not looking to good at the moment

cheers
Joe

I insured my first S2 at 19 and paid £1300.

£4000 seems a bit dear, shop around a bit more.Standard would be the way to go for cheaper insurance,Pass Plus may bring your premium down aswell but dont know if thats an option for you?

Best advice mate is to buy a standard one, it will be cheaper and will keep you happy for a while.

Get a CAT 1 alarm on it.

then get a classic car policy (age may be a problem with those policies)

If you get a classic policy you don't gain NCD, but you make big savings anyway so often makes no odds.

Call as many places as possible, always jot down who you spke to, the firm and the quote with excess and deposit and monthly payments.

Also get written quotes if they are good, I recently got a cheap quote and got it in writting, then the insurance company said there had been a mistake and wouldn't honour it, but, as the lad had told me a false name, confused my details, and lied about how i could pay, they had to honour it (conversations are recorded

Tell them your best quote if they ask, they will try and beat it and say they can't if they can't.

They don't care if you say you are going to drive carefully, they wont believe you anyway. Instead try to polite and chatty on the phone, they may be more willing to help you out, HIC and hyperformance were good like this, new their cars.

Pay a bigger excess to get the policy down, a stinger if you have a bump, but your not going to are you!!!

Then don't make claims for small things, try and keep a clean nose!!

Good luck mate, hope you get one sorted.

One last point, if you get a £1300 quote, and think that is more than you want to pay, get a quote on a 1.3 escort or something, it may be nearly as much, believe me it wont be as much fun so worth paying the extra to be grinning from ear to ear snug in your recaro seat

guys, really

rad, your quotes are cheap because you're OLD after 21 (and then 25) the risk of an accident goes down considerably (regardless of driving experience) so how old you are will affect the quote more than your driving experience... a learner driver @ 30 will have cheaper insurance than a bloke thats 22 and been driving 5 years!

i think the 4k quote would be cheap to be honest, i paid 3k for an XR3i!!!!! with a S2 at your age/experience they will LITERALLY just make up a quote out of thin air thats rediculoudly high just to make sure you dont take out a policy, they dont want people driving RS Turbos at 18! (bloody good reason for that too )

seriously mate, coming from someone who did go out and get a high insurance group car from the word go take my advice..

DONT DO IT!!!

wait a year, and THEN think about it... buy the cheapest piece of shit car you possibly can get your hands on and drive it for a year. you WONT regret it in the future. looking back on when i was 18 i REALLY REALLY regret ever owning that car... with the money i spent on that car in the first year of driving i could have bought an escort cosworth! no shit! and the car was only worth 800quid

Don't listen to Galbally, he's old and bitter.

Get a f*cking HUGE loan out and buy something mental whilst you're young and able to enjoy it.

It just so happens, we have many out of the ordinary cars in stock and finance is available subject to status.

You can also get a limited mileage policy, go for 5000 miles per year it will knock about 25% off of your policy. Also put you mum or dad as a named (not main) driver on the policy as this spreads the risk and lowers the premium

Also, can you afford the petrol bills? They are quite thirsty cars! If not just buy a 100 quid nova and wait a while. Thats what i did. Well Pug 106, but you get the idea!

the people saying how cheap it are are either old, or they had their cars YONKS ago.

pleeeeeeease take the advice of someone who'sbeen there, done that... DONT. may seem annoying having a shit car now, but in a year'stime i promise you WONT regret it.!

also DONT go on your mum n dads policy, 1) it's actually illegal (and yes i know everyone does it, but doesnt make it legal!) 2) it makes very little difference nowadays 3) thats NCB you'll earn by yourself is worth more than the extra cost in the 1st year!

I see what Jim is saying but...

On passing my test i rolled around in an MG metro, a montego then some XR's, was happy enough until my mate who is 3 years younger than me bought an XR2 for his first car, sold it and got an RS Turbo, then Bought a saff. Suddenly i realised what i was missing out on and bought my first RS Turbo Fiesta and the fun began.

Get the best quote you can for an RS and the best quote for a boggo car and put them up so we can see the difference.

If it ain't that big, then go for it, yes running costs are more on an RS but if you get a half decent S2 in a standardish form and treat it well then the cost isn't going to be that bad and the rewards will speak for themselves.

I got my Dad to insure my Cossie when I was 20 for 300 quid, I insured my Fiesta LX in my own name which enabled me to drive my Dads car which just happened to be the Cossie. Dont crash it though, I got lucky and kept my nose clean(Fuck knows how).

What Im saying is Limited Mileage Policies, Classical Insurance etc..... these all work

rad, 21 is a HUGE step from 17/18 you'd be lucky to get insured on a 1.0 metro for 1300quid @ that age!

Jim,

I agree with you 100%.

However, my only question would be........................ if yuo believe in what you're saying, why are you doing the EXACT oppposite with your saff?

Is it legal to do this ?, i mean i know you can drive other cars tpo if your fully comp but if the insurance found out you drove the cossie everyday what would there views be on it ?

Going on your parents policy.

I tried this once, insure my dad as the main driver.

They aren't stupid and most times will go of you as the main driver regardless of what you say, so if you dad alone was £300, and you alone was £1500, then they would most likely charge you £1300.

Need to be a bit careful with doing it that way, but ccan be done.

i drove for a year in a 1.0 106, then a 3i, xr2, 3i cab, now, 19, with 2 years no claims, im paying 1350 tpft with adrian flux (u have to be 19 though with them). at your age a quote under 2k tpft is pretty good going... its possible, but as jim says, buy a cheaper car and rag it to peices for a year, its amazing what you learn in the first couple of years...

when you get one itll be worth the wait trust me, they aint amazingly quick out the box, but you cant beat the turbo rush

I got my 200bhp+ rst at 17 and payed £350 as a named driver of corse on my mums policy. My first car was a tuned mk1 golf 1.8 gti cabrio which i payed well over the odds to insure on my own policy only to find out that the next year after 1yrs no claims it didnt drop so i thought fcuk this and just insured it through either my mum or dad its the only way your gunna get insured on an rs mate. BTW if you wanna know about the cheapest insurer in the world ! give the 'national farmers union' (NFU) a call thats who im with Im 18 now and its down to £240 with me as a named driver
Plus before anyone says thats bollocks ect i was in court 2 weeks ago for speeding and had to prove i was insured on the car and it held up in court with me as a named driver on my rs so it must be legal !

so why dont you buy somthing that you can afford with a lower ins grp,and then work your way up there loads of options!!! why not start with somthing like a fiesta supersport or a 1.3 escort mk 4 as an example!
you will get there in the end! Remember you are young but you will learn!

When i was 18 I had my hart set on this proper mint black xr2 that was for sale. I could afford the car but when looking for insurance some of the quotes were just stupid. In the end i had to have a reallity cheak and think with my head not my hart after having silly ideas about storing it for a couple of years till i could drive it.

I'm now 22 and have a s2 and am paying £1200 but have 0ncb. TBH it was well worth the wait but i'm glad I didn't take the plundge with that xr.

I would really sit down and think about it and take evrything into consideration.

Another thing wich no 1 has mentioned is also depending on your postcode will affect the price.
