Default Considerations for 400bhp+ Escort Cosworth?

A question the likes of which you no doubt get VERY often on here! I have a Zetec Turbo Fiesta which is great fun, and I love it to bits, but I want something with real pace and acceleration, and 4x4, and the Cosworth's been a dream car of mine for many years. (Is there anyone that doesn't apply to?? )

I've been toying with thoughts of Skylines, Supras and Cosworths, as I'd like an absolute minimum of 300bhp/tonne, and I think I'd be right in thinking the Cosworth would be considerably cheaper than the Skyline for doing what I want. Is that right? I don't know what price I could expect to pay to have a standard Cossie YB built up to a 400-500bhp spec, or what work needs doing to the diffs and box to be totally capable of taking that power with launches at the odd 0-60 event and some track action, so could anyone give me a rough rundown of prices if they've done something similar?

Engine rebuild, components, mapping, gearbox and diffs, plus the usual intercooler and radiator prices. Anything more I haven't listed in terms of power? Brakes and suspension etc etc would obviously be seen to!

It would be easier and cheaper to achieve with an R32 Skyline....

The trouble with either the Sapphire 4x4 or Escort is that to get it reliable, you have to spend a similar amount of money on the transmission or be prepared for it to be forever breaking. As long as you are prepared for that and don't mind the financial implications this brings, otherwise a 400bhp Escort is not an econimically viable proposition.

The Skyline might cost as much to achieve your 300bhp per tonne, but it would not then need the transmission upgrades, as the standard gearbox can take up to 600bhp with no problems (but expect to shorten the life of them if you take part in drag racing).

Obviously the cheapest option in both camps is to buy one that someone has already done all the mods to.

Cheapest way to get 4wd and 300bhp per tonne reliabley IMHO is a 400bhp GT4 celica or a 400bhp Evo

Both of which have engines and transmission that can take that power in stock form.

Not if you have to pay someone to build it for you it wouldnt!

But yeah, my mate is nearly finished doing a 4wd nova with about 300bhp and im really looking forward to see what she goes like

He's done an awesome job of it so far, almost finished now but he is doing special effects work over in slovakia at the moment for some hollywood film so cant do any more on it till next year when he gets back.

Thanks for the replies guys, I was expecting the usual "It's no as easy as just blah blah..." replies TBH!

Mike - I wasn't aware of the Skyline's transmission being SO strong, that's quite something. I much prefer the R33 to the R32, is it a similar story with the transmission on that, and are there any other reasons for you mentioning the 32 as opposed to the 33, or is it just cost? I listed transmission in this thread because I know they need serious attention on the Cosworth if you don't want to be replacing them every three launches Very fair point about buying one already done, but it just isn't the same as doing it yourself and knowing precisely what you've done is it? Hard one that....

chip - Fairy nuff, but they don't appeal in the same way the others do!

timrud - Indeed that German one really is an animal, never really been a Nova kinda guy though!

Hopefully I can keep the Fiesta for a few more years yet. You never know how thing's turn out I suppose, but I don't want to let it go for a while There's 400bhp RWD fun, then there's 230bhp lil FWD hot hatch fun!
