Default is it an mot failure if..

you cant open the boot from the outside - ie you dont have the key to the lock, but if you climb into the boot and flick the lever it opens.

or should i tie a bit of string round it so you can open it from the drivers seat

boot lock is not part of the MOT

however, reasonable access methods must be available incase of an emergency - IE - door handles

depends on the tester they like to check boot floor rear suspension easiest way is just to pop it just before it goes into the tesing station if not they may just write an advisery note saying they couldnt check in the boot

Load Security

1. Check that any bootlid. tailgate, loading door, hinged tailboard or dropside is or can be secured in the closed position.

Does not say you have to be able to open it but;

2. Refusal to test

g. A proper examination cannot be carried out because any door, tailgate, boot, engine cover, fuel cap or other device designed to be readily opened cannot be readily opened.
