First timer's guide to Cosworth Cambelt change....
Just working on the car last night and spied a very smal nick in the belt.
Quite rightly, I'm taking no chances, so I'm gonna do a cambelt change.
What do I do - this is the only thing I've never done on a cossie before, so a little unsure of how to go about it!
Any suggestions please?

Breif runthru
Remove Bumper
Remove Radiator
with car in neutral, line up the TCD marks (see picture below)
Remove Auxillay belts
Remove bottom pully
Check all timing marks
Slacken tensioner
Remove Belt
Refitting is the same as removal -0 but swearing in different places

new belt needed and if if hasnt been done to your knowledge before, a new tensioner pulley.
you need a couple of spanners and make sure you time it up right before starting. details of th etiming marks etc are in the tech essay archive

Check if the mark on the pulley for the cam sensor (phase sensor in ford speak, lol) is lined up correctly to begin with, if its not then dont rely on that mark to re-align it afterwards, go by the rotor arm instead.
Its a piece of piss, there really isnt anything difficult about it at all other than that.

the only difficult thing is removing the bottom pully as the bolt can be an arse to slacken, and the pully can brake if seized on

Gracey, yeah my pulley was a bitch.
didnt have the right puller so it took 3 of us and some lever bars and a couple of hammers to extract mine.
Do NOT whack it hard thoguh, you need to apply force all the way round at once, if you just twat it with a hammer it will break.

if you have a 3 legged puller then stick that on, and then tighten the puller up so it is tight then gentally tap the pully with a hammer and then re-tighten the puller - keep doing this untill the puller works the pully off naturally
my pully was a right twat to get off - well, i tell a lie, the bolt was
Copious amounts of copper slip on re-fitting the pully

Hardest part is the bottom pulley, they can stick like you would not believe and they can drive you nuts. If you get stuck, walk away and come back a bit later! I've lost it many times and launched spanners, knuckle bars etc. Some people like to use a cam locking kit as well, but you don't really need one. Don't over tighten it when you tension it up and move it through 360 degrees manually before you fire it up to check you don't have any slip in the belt and you've moved off TDC!

i managed without takin ghte bottom pulley off, if its nice and tight, leave it alone,

it is tight and you do have to bend it quite a bit, but nothing severe like crimping it over or anything like that...get it on the bottom pulley first while you can still move it at different angles then the rest is fairly easy. i allways run it round with ni plugs in by hand a coupkle of revs to check that the timing is still correct and for any damage to the belt itself.

Okay, I KNOW the bottom pulley bolt is easy enough to undo, but I'm worried about taking the crank pulley off, as I've seen em before where they're complete bastards.
I've never done a cambelt on this engine in 6 years, although it's done less than 10k in that time , so I think I'll do a belt AND tensioner to be on the safe side.
Can I get the belt on and off without taking this bottom pulley off then? I've seen it done that way before, but, I presume, by removing the CPS bracket?

Pon, crank pulley can be anything from real easy to real bastard, our 2wd one came off like a dream, my 4x4 one required lots of wd40 and every kind of lubricant I could think of, then a three legged puller got it off relatively easily.
I'd give it a try before giving up tbh.
Also, found an impact wrench is the best way to get the bolt off/on

if ya di tap it with a hammer avoid the 4 timing marks as they snap of very very easy !!!!!
but pon its not that hard, the tensioner needs doing that wa or it will come a tiny bit looser on tightening
oh and makesure the oilpump/dizzy pully is lined up as in the photo, look in the archives theres a class post about it, showed me alot
oh and ONLY USE THE BOTTOM PULLY TO TURN THE CRANK OVER, not the cam pulleys as that make em jump a tooth when turning if the belt turns out to be a little loose
when i done mine i managed to take my cam belt off by sliding it over the pulleys, never undone the tensioner AT ALL
guess what the timing was out a tiny bit too, cant think how that happened
good luck, if ya need anymore advice ya got rob and steves number , as no point taking mine unless ya fancy buying a new engine after ya put the phone down

Okay - the bottom pulley is a complete fucker and has just shattered
This is why I fuckin hate cars
Three legged puller I've got has a point on the bolt, so I don't know how you'd use that effectively?

b19bal,

It needs doing clockwise as its oblique and CENTRES the belt within its runners.

can be done without removing bottom pulley, cut old belt off and wind new belt around bottom crank gear
10 mins to do once you have done a few,
Not recommended way of doing it so Q the start of the non professional procedure messages
I have a crank pulley if you need one

Regarding the bottom get a proper harmonic balance remover. They're not too dear and it's a lot less stressful.
No need to remove the rad using this equipment either just undo it and swing forward. Obviously if you have a 500 spec coooler you probably have to remove it first.
