my escos was doing this when i bought it. it was actually the temperature sender unit wich is in the side of the radiator. about Ł10/Ł12 max. think they get corroded, shit up on them. the dickhead who had the car before me couldnt understand why his battery was going dead all the time and thought it was his alarm so he paid someone to disconnect the alarm. ( so when i came to reconnect the alarm when the problem was sorted i was horrified to see the alarm all hacked to bits so i had to get a new alarm installed) i was told that this unit is the only thing that turns the fans on.hope this helps i know its not a frst but the principal could be the same

Could be a faulty stat........

Sounds like you are struggling for flow through the rad with the rad being cold yet the pipes warm and the fans constantly running.

Sounds like the problem that arrises when you install an uprated alloy radiator in a cosworth. Is it a FRST though?

cheers sorry its a 2wd saff i had a prob with the thermostat the wrong way round so i thought so i re newed it and put the gold bit towards the head re filled with coolant and is still the same. its a standard rad with pro alloy intercooler in front.. the fans stay on when driving too and rad just luke warm but temp gauge just below the O on norm.. new pump hoses engine with new block brandnew t34.. rad also new.. i have tried all i can think of.. although it dont get so hot that it boils the headertank even left ticking over for ages... getting real pissed off with it now.

The spring on the thermostat goes into the engine.

Yes, the fans should pull cold air through the radiator and into the engine bay.

It sounds most likely that your radiator has had its day and is very inneficient, yet its new, so we must look at reasons for lack of flow through its cores.... Is teh system making pressure? IE: Does the pressure cap work?

im hoping its not the rad as its a new ford one cost over 200 quid.. the cap is one thing i have not replaced thinking about it .. just had a look at it and compared to an old one and looks as if the rubber ring washer is missing. although this cap worked fine on the old engine..

it was fine with the old engine in the car tho that is why im so pissed off.. it all ready had the pro alloy cooler in.. it is obviousley cooling the engine in some way as ive driven the car and it aint got that hot, ie on the gauge all new sensors too.. just the rad dont get hot like it should for the fans to cool hot water rather than luke warm.. if the rad was hot i wouldnt be bothered about the fans being on..

was thinking that for while but dont think it will make the rad get hot.. am i right in thinking that if the hoses going to the rad are quite hot.. the rad itself should feel around the same temp??

Yes.
You have no flow. Change the cap first of all as the pressure is a necessity to make the system work. You may have an airlock. Drain the water and start again.. SLOWLY.

Hello !
I actually have the same problem: fans wont go off... or are very long to stop. And my rad is cold all over; but seems hot just around the fan switch (and the hoses are hot too). It sound like thermostat closes when engine's temperature become cold enough but water flow just enough to keep the temperature around the fan switch too hot to stop the fans...
You have to know that all is new in my engine bay : rad, fans, wiring, engine, thermostat, fan switch, etc... and my engine is never overheating.
Thanks for your ideas.
Best regards
