Default HELP! FAO any experienced welders

i dont know if this is the right section... feel free to move if its not...

ive just managed to blag a job up on the fone, explaining that i can mig to a good standard and picked up arc in a day and successfully worked on structorial steels.
the guys prepared to take me on on a short trial, although may consider day release if he feels i have the right attitude and initiative to do the job.
the company is a demolition firm, ill be required to hardface and repair plant and equipement.
the only thing i've ever done that resembles this in anyway, was cladding a small bucket from a jcb but that was bolted on.

can any1 give me a quick lowdown on what i am likely to be needed to do and how to go about it as although i explain i had no relevant experience, i really ought to make an effort and get the job i just blagged!

i hate the doll sad.gif
please help!

but i dont know anything about hard facing!
Hardfacing is basically as its name suggest putting a hard surface on a softer substrate's working surfaces by using a welding process. In the case of plant machinery edges of blades, for example the teeth on buckets, edge of bulldozer blades etc. It's just to give the working surfaces more life and resistance to abrasion and wear. When they do wear down in most cases they can just be re-done.

If your okay with GMAW and MSAW welding you should be able to pick it up pretty quick but it's not just always just a case of welding around the edges you need to hardface, for example working edges are only hardfaced on one side to allow one side to keep an edge rather than rounding off. You will also need to consider that some parts will need pre-heating.

Something you need to be extremely cautious of is if you’re asked to hardface anything involved with lifting gear such as hooks - a lot of hooks are heat treated and re-heating them by welding them may weaken them, the consequences of which may be quite unpleasant.

There are also wear plates available which can't always be welded directly to the substrate but will need to be attached using methods such as weld washers (you weld the washer which holds down the wear plate).

Good luck with it, I’m sure once you get going with it you'll be fine
