Arent rotary engines kinda unrerelable and have a limited lifespan before a rebuild is needed? ( I have no idea, I have always thought they were unreliable )

They blow the oil seals out of them. They also have to be warmed up and cooled down => right pain in the arse if you ask me

if we don't bother about costs i would say the YB Millington Diamond engine...
Ultra light
Ultra reliable
Ultra rigid
Ultra power

Then the RS500 engine (in the 24hr Spa races they could ran 24hrs with 2.5 bar ct and using 2.7-8 scramble for the straights... and of course they finished first)

The RS200 2.2 Hart Evo engine... we 've seen the later to exceed 900bhp...

The 2.2 liter 5 cylinder Audi Quattro engine... Just check Dhalback's Golf RSI, and all the Monstrous Norwegian Audis...

Then would be the EVOs engine, the S2K engine (the old is 2 liter and the new is 2.2 liter), the SR20DET (we 've seen mega power from some), the 2.5 Scoody STI engine (actually its US spec but in Greece we have scoobys using this engine and run mid 9s Qrtr mile)

and i agree that one of the best engines is the 3-rotor (B20 if i remember correctly) in terms of power but they are not very reliable as the 4-stroke ones and they burn oil like 2-strokes...

Despite the YB being very easy to tune, it is NOT a perfect design and could EASILY be improved with a taller block and longer rods to make it more efficient. Then it would be perfect . To be honest there isn't a perfect road car engine yet produced, as each has it's own natural limits and needs aftermarket internals to be improved.

this is where millington engines come... they can go up to 2.6 liters with looooots of torgue. And they even build their own new design head which is much more efficient than the old cossie one...

e.g. someone ...rich... could build an all alloy engine with a 2.3 capacity and still be able to rev up higher than 8500rpm with a BIG turbo and see mega power...

You mean like Martin Hadland did .

Only problem is that this set up has to run an external oil pump, and this set up isn't as reliable as the standard internal one...

depends where you mean best as all engines have there plus points and bad point

for instance vauxhall 2lt turbo : easy to get 300 bhp out of not to bad realiabilty go much more than that and it need an exoencive rebuilt to take the power (rods pistons need changing maybe crank if going for big power) but the parts avalible are peanuts to buy cylinderhead Ł100 and there are hundereds availible because there the same head as a red top bottom end couple of hundered and stuff like the fact it has an afm means you can tune them for more power just on a chip without expensive remaps

cossie engine : dont know much about them but there more reliable for bigger power than from the vauxhall engine but can still cost alot to get there and parts prices are massive and from what i know there not that easy to come by either so i guess its a case of what in your personal opinion the word best means

i remember one of my geeky mates saying once that the c20xe (vaux red top) was the best engine in its class and that y all raylee teams was using it in that group.

ive got a red top my self thats going in a nova.
they are 150bhp standard.

but i also have a xr2 which im going to put a zetec in.
purly because you will get apx 250bhp just from bolting a turbo on it and getting new pistons.

it all depends what your looking for really.
some people dont like turbo engine and some people love them.

personal prefence is all it comes down to.

i always thought the c20let was inferior to the xe as it had cast pistons..

The M3 engine that produced 238bhp is 2.5 litres so that doesnt really count.

What about the 20v turbo vw engine. They seem to be very tunable for little money.
