Default Deocrating Advice Part 2. Coving.

Well thanks to Tiff and some others maanged to get the whole bungalow stripped yesterday of ghastly 1970's green flower wall paper.

The place aint got no coving and I was wondering the best way to put this up. Would it be a case of No More Nails or would you need to nail in place to.
Any help on this greatly apricaited.

stick it mate, its only cardboard covered polystyrene

then run round the edges and joins with decorators caulk once fitted up and adhesive has dried

then paint coving and ceiling first before walls (easier to cut in that way)

only prob with the polystyrene is that it marks easily, so be gentle!
if u use normal plaster type, get the powder adhesive and mix it so its thick.
a decorator done mine last week and watched while he put it up, no nails required either as it stays in place straight away

Use the plaster coving and get a bag of dry wall adhesive, much cheaper than "coving adhesive". Have fun cutting the mitres.

My advice ..

Use the Long lengths of plaster Gyproc coving only, makes a much better job than the poly type!

There are 3 sizes .. Use the one that suits the wall height
You should remove existing paper on the area it covers.
Take the template included and mark a line around the wall parallel from the top edge. This is a height line you can work to.
Tap small nails (I use galv slate nails) into the plaster on the line to help support when you stick it on.
Mix the adhesive up .. I butter the edges along with a building trowel.
Use your finger to go along the joints ; )
Cut the mitres (escpecially the outside corner ones) carefully using the included template for that size of coving.
Pretty easy .. and using the long lengths will make it fast to do.
Adhesive is personal choice .. I use Coving adhesive - big bags ... dont mix too much at once, cos it goes off quickly! I mix to a thickness that will just about stay on a trowel .. not run off!

Have fun!

i,m a decorator and do coving all the time, best bet is to use gyproc
127mm cove, most diy stores do a plastic mitre box made by artex which is the exact size for this .also use arterx to stick it up,mix it quite thick like polyfiller
this will not set in bucket like cove adhesive, and sticks much better
butter up both sides and push into position squeezing out adhesive
then run a scraper along top and bottom to remove excess then sponge off
with a damp sponge, you shouldn,t need to nail it or caulk the gaps this way

also to make the job easyer for the novice PVA the ceiling and wall about 4 ins out from ceiling angle this stops the adhesive drying to fast and gives you more time to mess with it

Cheers guys. Had a look at some brands today. The poly stuff looks like a bad choice so may use the plaster made stuff.
