Default FAO Cosworth Owners.. a warning!!

Is your light warning system playing up occasionally?

Maybe teh horn goes off now and then, or someetimes sounds feeble?

Battery or voltage/charging problems?

Then beware...
The turbocharger on these cars gets so hot, that even short periods of running without the heatshield can cause this:

And lead to a repair like this being required at great time and expense, and thats if your lucky and dont have the battery explode due to teh fact teh alternator output isnt fused, so it all shorts to earth like this one did

Not a nice state of affairs

Similiar thing happened to me recently whereby ONLY the Blue wire got itself cut off from the alternator.

The car was an absolute nightmare to drive, alsorts of electrical problems were happening whilst i was driving the car. Like i said, that was only the little blue wire coming apart, hate to imagine if the whole thing had gone to pots like above.

This may sound a little silly but how do ou protect them then, exactly where does the heat shield go?

Running with no heatshield is a BAD idea on a cossie.

I found the heatshields to be mega weak (ie too easy to crack/crumble) and a pain in the arse so i binned mine, heat wrapped the top section of the manifold and the downpipe, re-routed the wiring slightly, used a bit of heat-proof tape here n there, and job done, easy to access, no heat probs, everyones a winner

lets not get into that old discussion about tuners in dartford again eh

on another note, the wiring on my CURRENT car was found to be extremely shonky and a fire hazard when inspected by kenny @ msd! that wasnt heat related tho, that was the bloke twisting + taping wires instead of soldering em properly

wiring is SOOOOOO important and so many people overlook it

hence why i'm getting all mine sorted out by someone who know what theyre doing and getting all new loom n stuff made up "just incase"

Some good advice there Stu.

Saw it several times when working at SCC - causes all manner of electrical faults, and could ultimately lead to a car fire.

After seeing this a couple of years ago, I ripped off the loom tape around that area, checked all the wiring, rewrapped it, covered it in heatproofing tape, and made sure it was all securely tied down.

Whilst we're in that area, same goes for the clutch cable too! How many of them have you seen millimetres from the 2wd manifold/no heatshield

Job Done...
New alternator charge and power cabling.

Rest of the loom run around the wing instead, away from potential future problems.

New battery installed, and one potential inferno is safe again.
Sadly, its taken the best part of 6 hours, so take care out there, fit those heatshields.
