Default Sell the RST for a modded XR4x4 3.1 ltr

Some of you may have seen it for sale in the Ford mags, we had a look at it at the weekend, Imperial blue stage 2 3.1 V6 (quickshift, adjustables, monster4 brakes, full uprated exhaust, polybushes etc) could use it for the track, but mean selling my series two, the XR4 definitely different, but I like the fact the S2 is an RS and turbo'ed, dunno what to choose!

im sure the XR4 is nice but you have said it all really, the series 2 is an RS and its turbo'd i would have it over a grandad car anyday!

I heard n/a are better on track than turbo cars? Its just its got the brakes and suspension and loads of torque, the RST need quite a bit to get in on track and not really suitable for it at the end of the day.

I just thought a monster V6 be a bit different! Can't find any pics now, has cossie 4x4 bonnet, voodo alloys, cossie front bumper and sideskirts, doesn't look like a grandad car! lol

But yep, as you said I'm still drawn to the RST (even though its slower than the XR! Engine conversion done by Specialist Engines)

nothing wrong with the xr4x4

v6 are very strong engine and pull well for 150bhp but as thats a 3.1 im sure theres plenty of torque

but as you have alreadey said you carnt be a turbo car hence why im having a cosy motor in my xr4

which you could always do at a later date as its not hard at all

id choose the xr over te rst, evn though ive owned 1 sierra 4x4 and 6 rst

I knew XR4 owners would understand the appeal! (We'd keep the cossie still regardless so have the best of both worlds whether sell the RST or not)

It is a very nice hatchback sierra! lol had a lot of time, effort and money spent on it, which is why I can't make my mind up!

wheres my poll gone!

defo go for the XR4x4 for track use - remember, all out power isnt the big thing on track - its stopping and handelling and reliability

im sorry but the 3.1s aint even 200bhp and i think are only about 200-210 lb/ft peak torque, so still wont be particuarly fast... a well done 180+bhp RST should outpace it on the straights.

that being said, it'll be a lot more fun (imho) than a FWD escort on track... and it'll pull out of slow bends a lot nicer thana 1.6 turbo will...

whe i tracked my standard XR4x4 i did find it a bit slugish TBH, infact i was quite bored (untill i discovered olift off oversteer... lol) the XR4i was a LOT more fun... RWD kept me happy, but again in a straight line, most things passed me. straights became just a tad boring... and dont expect much oversteer with em either, you'll be snapping off the gas if you want to get it broadside at speed

so depends what you want... kick bakc in your seat acceleration, pick the S2... if you want a good car that'll track well but maybe bore you on the straights, get the XR

ps i love XR4x4s... theyre very under-rated... especially when compared to RS Turbos... standard vs standard i'd take the XR any day of the week... its only when you get into 200+bhp "sorted" S2s that i'd be disuaded from the big 'ol sierra.

Sorry to thread steal abit but jim Is the engine in yours out of a scorpio, granada, and what is it like compared with a 2.9 v6. Power and torque wise, and i presume you can fit a manual box on it?
Ps i have a 2.9 xr4i, just for oval racing, its been ported gas flowed, webber, huge exhaust manifolds, and kent cams and it amazing it will pull from any revs.

Besides RWD!!!

this is why I'm undecided!

Dunno whats been done to my RST, will have to post a pic up - should be going on the rollers Sunday, see what they have to say - it has a 'high boost' switch which kind of improves performance but also seems to overfuel, and limit boost and still not as quick as this XR4.
It needs new suspension including lower arms and uprated brakes etc and I'd be more worried about taking that on track (breaking something and not wanting to ruin it) than a sierra hatchback, don't really want to chuck loads of money at the RS, least the XR is ready to roll!

that looks very very nice in the pic

the more i think about it the more i'd take the sierra... the RST would have to be pretty special, and you'd have to be into FWD to really enjoy it more on track...

ps for whoever asked yes mine's the granada engine... from the early shape, not the bgeyed one. compared to the 2.9 12v it feels exactly the same as that up till about 3000 then all of a sudden extra power comes from nowhere and it pulls lovely up to the limiter (unlike the XR4 which'll die off at about 4k) it feels the same as a standard cossie really, only its got quadrouple the power where the cossie would be "off boost" still "laggy" tho as you need to get the revs up to hit the powerband... that can be dealt with tho but i've promised myself i wont staert spending on the engine till the rest of the car is 120%

S o your engine is standard, because for what i want everythink could go, ie emmisions, so what sort of bhp you think. The exhaust seem pretty restrictive. Think i will have to get min rolling roaded as it i first, anywhere in cumbria anyone? Thanks TOm

mines the best of both worlds aswell as its a cosy under the bonnet

Its not a great picture, looks even better from the front, theres something about the sound of a V6
The Specialist Engines ex show XR4 3.1 turbo is on Ebay too.

Trouble is we got the RST at a very good price, if I were to decide I wanted another one next year (can't use it over winter on the roads I have to use, ruin it) I think it'd be impossible to find one as good for the same money (would have to pay at least Ł1k extra)

I think i've seen the car b4, I'm sure that's a 2.8 base 3.1 if i'm not mistaken

TT kits are easily source for the 2.8's and the T3 even at low boost makes that infinately more drivable get 10 psi through one and you'll have a really fast road going car

just dont expect to love the fuel bills

well i dont know what tuned RST's are list but i will say IMO a stock v6 XR4x4 will eat stock mk6 RS2000 and stock RST's. so a mildly tuned 2.8 will be nice. dont have vision of big power tho, i doubt that'll be making 190bhp, but i'd expect it to be running over 200lbs/ft of torque peaking nice and low.

find out the spec, if the engine is 3.1 this is easily achieved with a machined 2.9 crank and over bore, which will give a increase in torque but not much power. will wanna make sure the heads have been work and to what extent and also if the seats have been replaced with hardened items. there are later 2.8 heads that already have hardened seats but i've seen these fail to VSR from using unleaded so beware
