Brake disc squeaking ..... PROBLEM SOLVED
Can anyone help with any ideas on this one :
On the RST I have had a squeaking coming from the front drivers side wheel for a while now, and have been trying to cure it. The squeak isnt constant it only makes a noise on one 1/4 of a revolution of the wheel.
So far have check that caliper isnt seized and it returns all ok after the brake pedal is released.
There wasnt any play in the wheel bearings but took the hub off to check and found the hub was worn and there was play in the bearing when no load on the hub shaft. I replaced the hub and fitted a new set of bearings, put it all back together.
I still have this squeak
Is seems to be the brake disc touching the pad as the wheel rotates and causes a high pitched squeak. Theres NO brake judder but could the brake disc be warped causing it to touch the pads and thus make the noise ???
The discs are Tarox groved and drilled and wasnt cheap, the pads are mintex 1144 if that helps.
The squeak does get worse when turning left and is silent when turning right, i guess when the weight transfers from side to side.
Any ideas cos i have thrown a good few hours and ££ at this problem now and cant find a cure for it

Is it the wheel touching the caliper ? Is it just on a normal rotation, i.e. jack the car up and spin the wheel round ? Is there a mouse trapped in there ? Is it your wallet opening whilst your bending over to inspect it ?
Had exactly this on my old setup, its the mintex pads m8, 99% sure of it. I kept taking mine out every 2 weeks or so, rubbing the surface down and slicking the backs back up as they kept glazing over and causing the high pitched squeal (it used to get really bad) I know others have mentioned this with the mintex pads, I think its the material they are made of, it went when I put my crappy old ebc pads back in

Defo not my wallet opening or the wheel touching the caliper Adam, i did consider changing the pads but the squeak is ONLY when NOT braking i.e the noise goes away as soon as the pad is pressed onto the disc and only re-appears when the brake pedal hasnt been pressed for 30+ seconds of driving
I did remove the pads and take the surface off with bit of emery cloth and chamfered the edges of the pads but it made no difference at all, soon as i drove down the road the noise was still there
I think i got a set of EBC green pads (yukkk) in the shed so i might try throwning these on the car and see if the noise goes. But i cant understand why the disc is touching the pad and making this noise in the 1st place and why its worse when turning left and noise disapears when turning right

only use synthetic oil though as mineral based or hydro cracked oils will break down quckly and in under 2k miles ya will have to re oil the pads again
use mobil one and ya wont ever hear a squeek from the car again,
ill even buy the engine off ya when ya drive it into a tree on the first test drive

Found the solution to the noise.
Replaced the Pads (mintex1144) with a spare set of EBC Greens i kept in the shed, and noise gone. Think i may have cooked them on track and caused the whole pad material to become hardened and just where the disc kissed the pad when turning was causing the high pitched squeaking
Only got 800 miles out of this set of pads and they are 3/4 worn
Who said track days are hard on brakes?
Anyone know what is the maxium temperature for mintex 1144's is ???

I read that the maxium temp for mintex 1144's is 450ºc, is it possible that the temps get higher than that with a 200bhp 980kg RST on track?
Dont really know Alex. The surface of the pad has dark areas on it and i cleaned them up with a bit of emery cloth and put them back on and the dark areas returned with in seconds of using the brakes along with the squeaking noise.
Maybe i should contact mintex and send them off to be looked at. The pad has also started hair line cracks in the center running from top to bottom.
p.s they never once faded around bedford, and at one point we did 16 laps without a cool down lap or a break to let the brakes cool off and they felt as good on the 1st lap as they did on the last lap of that run
