Depending on which version it is, the Golf will either be in the region of 115bhp or 150bhp. If the former, I'd say it'd be close and down to driver-skill; if the latter, I'd say the Golf would wipe the floor with the Escort (as long as both drivers are of roughly equal skill).

Mk2 Golf Gti 16v has 139 bhp as standard. I had one before my cossie and it comfortably beat Escort Gti's in the traffic light grand prix.
