Default why do we still use......

why do we still use pressure controlled wastegate actuators?

why havent we ditched them yet,, i would of thought that a electronic linear actuator would of been used by now

just thinking out loud really

Gareth, the problems are...

1) HEAT - kills electronics
2) SPEED/STRENGTH - Needs to be fast moving and strong

Could be done completely electronically but you would end up paying LOADS !!!

Interesting thought though Mr T. As said, heat problems would kill the plan. A remote-activated servo (ie with a rod from the servo to the wastegate) would need a silly long rod to mean the servo could be situated anywhere

heeman10,

Problem with servos is it needs to be VERY strong and quick reacting.

Dont forget,, the wastgate must be STRONGER than the highest exhaust gas pressure !!!!

i still think its possible,, there is many ways too get around the actuators strength,,, like adding a gearbox of somekind, or even making the pivot longer on the wastegate end

Rhys - Like I say, only applying that to this in particular. I hate that attitude, one I often hear living up here where time stands still!
