Jim what ever you do DO NOT BUY A MITO
You are 100% right they are money pits but when running right they are quick money pits
£118 per piston without rings or ring which ever piston kit you buy
Mine locked up 4 times in 14month the last one at 175kmh proper scared me
They are spot on when there running right but that is very rare
Mine was rather warmed up though and made 36bhp on the dyno maintained by a bsb mechanic

No single cylinder 125 2-stroke is a moneypit as they're all dirt cheap to rebuild!
I hate 125's though, can't ride them! Don't forget: a 125 hasn't got any power that's why they're called learnerbikes but it's actually much harder to ride fast as you have to keep them on the boil....hence my choice would be the mito as you get 7 gears to play with!
BUT if I'd have 3k I'd get the Aprillia RS250 or the Suzuki RGV250, both share the same engine, very cheap to tune, easy to work on engines.
Priller has more Italian flair (if you like that sorta thing) and the Suzuki is a tad more oldfashioned. 3K will get you a very very very fast and tidy RGV and leaves you some money to throw at the woman!

Jim...on todays roads, which is full of drunk drivers/old gits/boy racers, for a new rider youd be better off and a lot more comfortable to take an overdose and by a 3k beautifully crafted coffin!

Jim,
Don't get a 125 "road" bike, they look , the proportions look all wrong IMO.
I started off on an MTX125R, then got a TS125X (after the MTX was written off by a stupid woman pulling out on me ), with the washer removed from the exhaust, it made an instant 21bhp and did an indicated 87mph (sitting up). The great thing was, you could take it off-road and have loads of fun on berms / off-road courses etc. Learning to wheelie on one of these is much easier as well . Also IMO, the motoX look is much cooler on a small bike than trying to look like a racer on a bike that doesn't have the power to pull the skin off a rice pudding .

If your even considering buying a mito think again, I bought one in 2000 and have to completely rebuild it it 2002.
The gearbox was fooked the first day I got it, couldn't select neutral, after the 6th time sending it back to the factory they eventually fixed it!
I kid you not the italians appear to have had a huge team of iraqy apprentices put the fuckers together.
Whatever could break on that bike did, I've heard nothing but horror stories from everyone who's ever had one.
Looks nice though Much like a chocolate fire guard

Ducati parts swop right over from the mito so I'd also never ever buy a ducati.

ok how many times did ya rag these tiny engine bikes
its a bit like saying cossies are unreliable, erst's are unreliable ect
rag the arse off em and tune em then ya need to uprate and check the parts
ride em normal and ya fine
theres a bike for the kids to finish there paper round ffs
they look like a fast bike, i had a 1300 escort with a erst kit on it, if i tuned that and ragged the arse off it then it wiuld have died sooner than me cossie
infact in a year i had it the car went from a reliable 350 mile to a tank car to a car that used 4 litres of oil in 3 months and done 130miles to a tank
but i got 113mph out of it once , averaged 90 on all motorways and i done 30k miles in that year
also done the gearbox, clutch plate, wheel bearings and 9 tyres too
does that mean it was a unreliable car or i just abused it triying to keep up with cossie's/erst's and the only way was to hold it flat out for longer and weave in and out of traffic
if ya want a race bike, buy a race bike
