Been to the maldives, er, four times

www.kuredu.com is where we have been and returned so many times.

Absolutely love the place, best thing about it is that islands are tourist only, there is absolutely no thefts or fear or your safety, and you won't get hassled on the beach for money

There are no security guards you can see either, unlike other places which have heavy security to protect their customers.

Check out www.scullard.com for pictures of our trips, although most are underwater pics

Went to the Maldives last October.

Its absolute paradise (well it was before the Senami!!)

The islands are all tiny, we stayed on the 3rd largest island out of about 1900 islands in the Maldives. And it was not much bigger than a football pitch, and only rose about 2m out of the sea.
www.meeru.com
is the web site for the island we stayed on, we was lucky enough to get upgraded to a honeymoon suit which is on stilts out in the indian ocean.

Me and Louise got engaged there and we will defo go back for our honeymoon.

Matt.

FROG,

How did you get your underwater pictures to come out so well??
I have a Sony digi camera with underwater case and a lot of the pics came out very green, should we be using a filter or something.

P.S. Racey, if you go get an underwater camera

I have been the Maldives and am possibly going to Maritius via South Africa this year

anyways the Maldives is totally fantastic lots of small islands so very small resorts and its just so pretty the snorkling was awesome the diving is meant to be even better its a place to relax n chill nothing really to do bar rest and watersports. It blew me away it was everything I imagined and more from a tropical island sun clear water wicked sunsets no need for shoes

a couple of pics i took need i say more..... i think not

check the sea plane parked out back

sony digicam too, you must have your flash on, and if you take pictures from far away, they will be green anyway, the flash can't light up very far.

But, I did tweak a few in photoshop to take out the green tinge, some even look artificial as a result of my inability to touch images up properly

Travel from airport to islands depends on distance first, some islands are a mere 20 minutes by boat, others over 6 hours !!!

Kuredu is one of the furthest islands, so we always took the sea plane option, only 45 minutes of glorious views.

I'd love to try the boat once though, dolphins, etc... but nats is not too keen on boats

Scuba diving rocks

If you want to go diving, you can go with instructors and do a little course which enables you to dive with a group within limits.
Otherwise, you will need to do a full course which allows you to dive on your own (with a buddy), but that's a lot of work when you're on holiday, you'll need at least a two week holiday to squeeze it all in (five day course).

That's what we did first time out, but didn't quite feel like a holiday between book reading, classrooms in the evening and excercises during the day.

Best option BY FAR is to do all the course work and basic excercises in the UK, then complete your course in the first couple of days of your holiday. You then have the rest of the time to ENJOY

Just need to find a diving club that will allow you to do a referral course, also must be PADI.

frog yes it is great islands but if i was to go back would need to be a smaller island having said that you hardly saw anyone in the daytime I allways wondered where everyone went

Racey

shop about there are some cracking deals on the Maldives because of the Tsunami which it seemed to escape somehow and go for a small island with as few rooms as poss there are some top named resort out there ie Four Seasons, Banyan tree etc and occasionally u cant find a cracking deal

ps

member to check u not going in monsoon season
if its windy look up falling coconuts
dont get burnt cos its near the equator u burn quick v quick
get a sea plane to ur island (fantastic views) Plus u wont want a boat ride after the plane journey
pack sun wear as ur luggage arrives much much later
watch for sand flies

Nothing bad about it tbh, if you've never dived before you'll probably find it's the dogs danglies.

Only thing is you are restricted to certain dives sites and trips which can become a bit boring after a while. Depends how much diving you want to do, and since it all costs money, also depends on your budget.

I'd go morning, afternoon and evening every day if I could afford it.

Saying that, it's a great way to get started and see if you like it.

You get to see the fish as soon as you step in the water, and if you throw little bits of bread in they swarm around you, we have some great pics from doing that.

The Dolphins out there are smaller than you generally see on TV etc but there are thousands of them, if you get to go out on a boat trip than do it.
Also you get flying fish out there and they are cool to watch

I know what you mean, we stayed in a bungalow the first three times, and there's loads of people in the baboona bar all night.
Last year, we went for a jacuzzi beach villa at the end of the island and saw no-one

PS: Racey, talk to nats about booking, she sorted our last holiday direct with the resort and booked own flights, I think we saved Ł1K to Ł1.5K that way

Remember it is going to be winter there soon (mauritius), it is cooler, still hot though but the sea is quite cold. Gets quite windy as well.

My girlfriend`s mate went in our summer expecting it to be very hot!!

Also they dont really have a "dusk" as such at that time of year it just gets dark lol. Takes around half hour in their winter time. Its still plenty hot when your used to UK weather though

1K to 3.5K (or 6K if you go for the top resorts where schumi go for example) for a couple of weeks two people, depends on what resort, all-inclusive, etc...

Not the cheapest holiday by far.

We usually go end of november/early december as this coincides with our birthdays, it's just about time for the monsoon to turn and the weather to get better, but you can still have heavy rain at that time.

Mid-december to april is best in maldives, but also the most expensive

you can hire a speed boat and go off hooning round the island at 70psi and get up to naughtyness at sea*
