Default Group A head gasket!!!!! a few questions.. cosworth

Hi there, have a few questions regarding Cosworth head gaskets.

I have a Group A gasket, and after 1000 miles running in and then 1800 miles @ 20/22psi (340-350bhp) its blown!!!!!!!!!!!!

Now im running a 205 block / 3 door head, it drips water from the head/block join drivers side back of engine!!!! and you can see it drip!!!

why would this happen in such a short time...... would this be down to the gasket or instalation of the gasket??????

whats a safe BHP for a group A??

and what gasket would you guys recomend to replace it with?

thanks

Matt,
The YB611 gaskets are PROVEN, so it can ONLY be down to the installation to let go at this mileage.

Hello, unfortunately the YB 205 engine has a weak spot exactly where its leaking from on yours! Is the water going into the oil?If it is just coming out the side of the block at the end in a minor way,i dont see a problem with continued use.

Apart from the "minor" inconvenience of it loosing it's entire water contents every 28 miles .

And the problem had nothing to do with the 205 block, it was the headbolts and these were redesigned back in the late 80s (where many 3 drs had the gaskets / bolts replaced under warranty).

I've had no problems with a Group A gasket fitted nearly 5 years ago.

Like Gareth says, it may have been slightly damaged when being fitted.

yes thats what the guy told me, about these getting replaced under warranty, i mean i know it aint them as i have the ARP stud kit holding it together.

So it looks like down to fitting .... or maybe the head/block wasn't flat, either way its fooked!!!!!!!!!

So ............... do i go for another GROUP A item something else???? bareing in mind i dont have buckets of money to chuck at it!!!!

Mike Rainbird, they are prone to blowing at that point due to the not so good water flow of the 205 engine compared to the 200 series. The problem my dear friend is heat from the turbo/manifold/exhaust and a not so good made gasket,of course not ALL blow prematurely, but when they do its normally at that area.palmer3914 may i suggest you use the cometic multi layer gasket at around Ł120 this will cure the problem, but do make sure you check head/block for flatness.

You may have found the problem . ARP bolts and 205 blocks go together like paedophiles and primary schools . You should have used standard bolts, as the ARPs crack 205 blocks around the stud holes and this is probably why coolant is pissing out everywhere .

Ham,
The constant heating / cooling process in that area caused the original studs to stretch more than they should have, so most of these have long since been replaced under warranty and the old studs haven't been in circulation for a number of years now, having been superceeded to cure the problem .
