yeah beam made a massive diffence - in the drive from the ramp to the rollers lol - 50ft?

Wouldnt have a clue - mike sold me a banana shaped one - probably his old one also changed so much on the car at one time its impossible to say.

Car is coming on good - been run on the rollers in all sorts of guises now. We achieved our goal of 204bhp so its a healthy 2wd saff lol

Will see you are nat day mister

That's not the rear beam though martin, that looks like a pic of a magnesium trailing arm

This is the rear beam (the coat hanger shaped tube) from another type of Grp A Ford:

The old 2wd GpA round beam in the diagram are pretty much a std beam , theyre double stitched and strenghtened with a gusset between the diff nose area and use a different smaller bush or machined up alloy spacer .
On a side note and without wanting to be rude to someone you all respect , I bought a set up from a VERY reputable source that "Looked Identical " to a "Bayjoo "beam set up , its not adjustable in situ and was appallingly badly made , i got rid of it real quick for a Gpa Type like above which is fully adjustable in every way ! cheapest and best bit of performance ive bought for the car i reckon .
Regards
Tony

martin-reyland, you posted that pic on another thread and i posted up a response to you along the lines of:

although that beam does look very good and must be a significant improvement on a std one and probably an improvement over a grp a or banjo one, i still don't see why you have put so much effort into building what is essentially a poor suspension method. you've still got a semi-trailing arm (albeit an adjustable one) that has inherent compromises.

personally, i would have constructed a double wishbone set up (actually i have, for my mk1 escort based on a narrowed sierra beam). i made a kind of tubular cage around the diff, the bottom part containing pivot points for the bottom wishbone, and the top for the top wishbone. a coilover strut then comes of the top of the hub for springing and damping, and another link off the bottom of the hub for the toe control. all joints were with adjustable rod ends to be fully adjustable for camber, castor and toe. the top wishbone was slightly shorter than the bottom wishbone, so that camber increases slightly as the wheels moves up on compression.

I'm not saying that what i made was better than what you have, but double wishbones seem to be used by virtually all top level motorsport cars, and the best road cars. it seems that with a little more thought and effort that you could've come up with the ultimate cossie rear end, rather than just a development of existing stuff.

hope that you take my comments constructively, and hope to have a response from you as to why you did what you did

but martin is not restricted by any regulations at all, so would be able to make it any way whatsoever. it doesn't make a lot of sense to me to make custom parts and then not make them to the best possible layout (which clearly he is capable of doing with his abilities)

i didn't mean it like that brom. i realised after i'd wrote it though that it reads like that.

i meant it more like: why make it like the wrc one, when he has completely free reign over type, pick up points, link lengths, hubs etc.

yours is superb though, and is more the type of thing that i would go for (although i couldn't build it as well as you )

With no disrespect meant here...but all you guys making your own suspension is surely dodgy?....You are not designers and therefore are potensially risking your own health and others if something wasnt quite right...maybe explains the Reyland crash?

Take it how you like BUT its just an observation and not meant to upset/windup.

Without people like Martin & Brom , cars get left in the dark ages, suspension geometry isnt a black art , common sense more like , im all for pushing the boundaries a bit even ive considered using wishbone suspension on cossies , ive got touring car rear shox adapted to my racecar and im learning all the time
regards
Tony
