Default External wastegates - how do they work?

Just a question for my mate really as he's discovered he's got one on his Scoob (also I'd like to know how they work)

His is venting off to atmos via a screamer pipe as shown below

same as a normal wastegate, just not attatched to the turbo

maybe, if the standard exhaust is restrictive.

looks like a std downpipe, but thats unlikley.

what turbo is he running? must be pretty big to use an external gate...

Only an advantage on large turbos at 500bhp plus sort of power, where the internal wastegate can't vent enough gas at high RPM to control the boost and you end up making 30psi like it or not

that isnt true,, they are always better than an internal wastegate if designed correctly

I know its not a standard turbo thats about it lol

Ah just been told its equivalent to T4...
