Default Transit Recovery Idiots Guide

I'm thinking about picking up a transit recovery truck, purely for moving my own track car and related bits. Can anyone give me any pointers on where to start finding a good one? I've seen a lot of ropey looking conversions so any legalities that I need to be aware of would be helpful.

I guess I'm looking for something with dual rear wheels with a relatively long wheel base and ramps included, preferably with a winch. I obtained my license just after the 97 cut off, so I would be wanting something like a T350? ideally looking for about 12-1300kg of payload.

Thanks in advance.

ive had trucks for personal use for years, you will find you get asked to do jobs and then idiots will offer you peanuts to do jobs.
I have an 05 transit doublecab, this suits me as I can get my escort and any passengers and tools in. with ease and makes me first call when people break down with a few passengers lol
3.5t trucks are pointless for anything but car movers and most of the time with anything decent on you will be overweight.
i take my mk2 escort to tracks with mine.

my advice is buy on rust condition if getting a transit, i went 250 miles for mine and made him video all the arches and sills.
also check mot failure history for rot.
if transit the MK6 tddi are the more reliable than the tdci which have pump and injector problems
winchwise i just have a cheap £300 winchmax 13000lb one that does me just fine

Cheers David, I think with my license I'm stuck at 3.5t without doing another test. Luckily it's to move a XR2 so not the heaviest thing, but it would be useful if i could do other bits with it. It probably will be a Mk6, I'll try to find a TDDI version, thanks.

I was looking at something like these (not this exact one, ignoring the price and condition):

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/264429901905
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/283592127194

I presume the 2.4 is the TDDI version and the second one (2.2) is the TDCI

Thanks for the help
