Default rough sounding gearbox, thicker oil or an additive?

hi guys just picked up a cheapo micra gearbox sounds a bit rough when driving, a woman had it before me for years, i had to adjust the clutch cable cos half the travel was taking up the cable slack, so god knows how long it was being used like that, only half clutch travel..

anyway, would changing to thicker oil work on the noise or one of them additives?
Or just live with the roughness, quite firm sometimes to go in and out of gears aswell, nothing major tho..

If anyone has any experience with both, its a 2002 model, k11 i think they are..1.0L

only grabbed it cos almost years mot for £300..might just bin it when mot runs out, maybe

cheers..

They were known to have chocolate gearboxes that would least maybe as long as 50,000 miles before needing replacements

That's why I bought a fiesta

That needed a gearbox

Then another fiesta

That also needed a gearbox, but lasted a whole year rather than only a week

I put 50k miles on a k11 Micra. Very reliable car.

The uj on the gear selector can go a bit tight but it's easily removed cleaned and re greased. You could try giving the gearbox a oil change and maybe add half a bottle of Lucas Oil Stabiliser.

Those micra boxes must be 2 a penny at a scrap yard, I bet you could change one in half a day.

It will be bearings , I work for a transmission place and that's all we seem to do

nowadays . We have done diff carrier bearings on Micra's before .

Vw's, Renault /Vauxhall , Peugeot/Mini are our favorites.

Very rarely do ford boxes except transits .

if you want to try an additive try the lucas oil stuff - theres one specific for gearboxes and one for engines and gearboxes...you want the later...

http://www.lucasoil.co.uk/products/t...ansmission-fix

after a couple of trips it blends in nicely....you want to drain the oil then add 80% of the standard gearoil then 20% of this stuff

110k on the box with lovely changes

Lol , I would not waste your money , unfortunately once the case hardening comes off of the rollers or balls its game over.

Strip and replace bearing or fit another box , assuming its been diagnosed correctly .

For £300 just drive it until it dies. If the gearbox is fucked its fucked.
No amount of fancy shockproof oil will help.

Although saying that, have you checked that there is actually any oil in it?
