Have I bought a lemon?...

So I had planned to build a cossie rep/track car using a Mk5 shell, was told the 1.8 silvertop was ready to run minus an injector and a battery. Picked it up for pennies really but then it came and the battery has been put into the passenger footwell and the engine was a diesel but I'm not sure if they even finished the 1.8 Zetec conversion with the amount of wires and the loom going to nothing, any help would be appreciated. 😂

You have certainly got plenty to keep you busy by the look of it! If as you say it was cheap to buy my advice would be get a decent auto-electrician to try and sort it out.Is the engine all bolted in and coupled up to a clutch and gearbox?

Yeah the engine is all bolted in, Again it's just got a few plugs of which I'm not sure what they go to as you can see above, From what I could tell it's coupled up, I was able to depress the clutch and change gears with the engine off.

Well at least that side seems ok, once the wiring is sorted out it should start up and run. When you buy an unfinished project without knowing exactly what has been done to it it can be a bit of a minefield. Hope you get it sorted out and then you can start on paintwork and interior.

Well the seller said it was just an injector short of running, and I'm having trouble even getting one of those...but do you think it would fire with all those plugs even going to nothing.

I know what you mean mate, it's here and I expected a project but jeez I'm not even sure if they completed the engine swap and wiring. I need to find someone who can tell looms ect just from looking at them! It's got a different ecu in so I assume the loom must be changed but half of those plugs go to something that is not there? So I need to figure out what I need to put there or even if those plugs need using.

Had the same with my cossie build, bought someone else's unfinished wiring nitemare, at least yours just looks like plugs, mine had been cut about and was a real mess.
Fit whatever you need to to get it running, turn the key and see what works and go from there, if yours was a diesel there will be brackets etc missing that you will need to find from the petrol, has the fuel system been changed over?

Well it's not just a case of dropping a petrol engine in, if it smells like it's had or has petrol in they've probably done it, I don't know but others might but I'd be guessing the tank and pump will be different, fuel lines may run differently, ask the previous owner exactly what they did, defo not a lemon it's just a bit of work if you got it for good money, if it only needed an injector I don't understand why they wouldn't have done it but get one fitted and fire it.
If it's an unknown engine and if it's a cambelt not chain I'd have it done once the car runs and your happy all is ok.

Yeah the only problem I'm having short of firing up the engine is getting hold of an Injector, They seem like gold dust, And I picked it up from someone who took odds and sods off of it for their MK5, An injector namely being one bit

You have there a silvertop. They use side fed injectors. Injector seals are hard to find now.
Blacktops use end fed injectors so will not directly swap over.
There is a pic with a black box on the inner wing that looks like an edis 4 modual. Not sure about the escort but they only used these on automatic Zetec's for latter cars. If the engine has come from an auto as well and it hasnt had the crank sensor boss changed then it will never fire.
What's the code on the ecu plug ? Four letters or numbers. Often looks like a name but not on very early cars. I.e. Desk Deep jeep owls there are hundreds of them.

I would agree that the just needs an injector is bollox, it's like saying it just wants re gas when the ac is shagged. I've never had one yet that I could get away with just a re gas.
I would get a set of injectors and not just one.

I'm starting to understand that now, maybe I'm in too deep with this one and it's worth weighing it in, but there's not many Mk5 shells and cars remaining so I'd feel bad about that

that has got to be one of the first Zetec ecu's.
So the Edis 4 is correct to the ecu as it ran external Edis. So the crank sensor boss ect will also be correct.
It's only the 105ps version so just over 100bhp.
I wouldn't give in just yet. There may be a little info around on the net and there are lots of options to upgrade it.

I spoke to the owner who did the engine swap and he did say he actually had it running but yeah I'd really like to get the part and check so when that arrives I will update on here.

Before you start spending, check the wiring loom around the injector plugs. The heat made the plastic sheath go hard and fall of. This gave all sorts of problems with injectors shorting.

A set of four in the rail stand a better chance of being clean serviceable and matching part numbers and probably just as cheap.

Very very relieved especially after buying it with the premise with those parts it would work, hope it does sound smoother with an exhaust but its proving hard to figure out if the owner cut this exhaust or it sleeves on, it literally finishes just after the manifold and a bit of downpipe.
The wiring is okayish, those plugs with nothing going to them are part of the old loom, the owner put in 2 fuel cut offs, was a nightmare figuring them out and getting it started

Not yet, it will be getting the brakes or exhaust done next, the servo/reservoir is completely empty of brake fluid and the brake pedal has absolutely no push in it and it's solid, I'm assuming the brakes need to be bled and new fluid

If the only thing wrong with the brakes is that they need bleeding and fluid you will be lucky. Start with trying that and see how you get on. If the car has been standing for a long time there may be other problems but its a case of doing one thing at a time.
