Autronic SM4 ECU

Autronic SM4 ECU
Are all Autronic SM4 ECU's the same?
If I bought one that was made in 2007 or today would it still have the same functionality and if not can it be upgraded / flashed to update?
Can an ECU that has been fitted to a totally different manufacturers engine be used, with appropriate loom and chip - if it's chips they use to work on a Cosworth YB engine?
I have an almost brand new used but quite old ecu potentially available. Bought in 2007 but only installed last year and then project abandoned. Can I use the ecu for my cosworth with some work, updates or fettling in the right hands?
Cheers.

I've found that life I needed.. It's HERE!!
The SM4 ECU can be used on pretty much any engine, you'll just need to configure it for your application.
They have chip / firmware versions, the latest is v1.12 i believe, and is a physical chip change inside the ECU. Mark Shead can supply and fit this for you. If it was purchased new in 2007 it will probably be an old version (1.07), you don't want anything less than v1.09 really.

Hi Wes and thanks for the reply. Pretty much what I was after. It is v1.09 so still a use able bit of kit.
I didn't want to buy an old dinosaur just because it was an autronic sm4 and then not be able to do anything with it.
if it's cheap enough it's worth buying and spending a bit getting it to where I need it for my engine.
As you say, Mark would be able to configure it correctly for my application.
Cheers.

**RS COSWORTH**
You will need a custom loom made for the ecu to fit a cosworth. Have it supplied and fitted & mapped under 1 roof.

A good tuner will always make an effort or at very least be honest with their customers.
Good luck with your choice.........

Good point mate, you are very limited who you can use with autronic, id go with a more modern ecu like link if I were you, work out cheaper in the long run and its more modern and easier to use. Both pj motorsport and brands hatch performance can supply and fit for reasonable prices not much more than a second hand autronic set up. I wish id gone down this road rather than what iv done, wasted a lot of time and money and still got an un mapped car.

Prob the better idea as some tuners are very picky about who's cars they want to work on. You do not want your pride and joy with them for X amount of time only to be told they are not going to do the work.

ecu was £500 and the loom was on here but thats sold so I was looking at £750 and it just needed a chip set.
why all the cloak and dagger stuff?
Think I will stick with l8 ecu, 8 injectors, t4 and tons of lag - proper old school!

You do not get a second chance at life so failure to do this will mean your car will be refused to be worked on.

what you need to do is deliver a car to a standard where it is possible to drive a car either on the road or rolling road in high load conditions in safety while limiting the chances of a problem.

You didn't want to do my car from the start before you even saw it, im aware of the small issues all that have been rectified and took no time, don't hold back on the issues with my car that this so called expert hasn't spotted, as you have already chose to go and tell other people of the issues and that my car is a bucket of shit behind my back, so thanks for that, lesson learnt I should of stuck to the tuner I was with who iv had no issues with, then I wouldn't of had all this grief, wasted lots of time and money.

Photobucket playing up. Go and look at the cuts in your rear tyres and then tell me your happy with them and that your other did not spot that.

The cuts are not that bad it passed a valid mot with them, so that's rubbish. I have since changed the tyres, as I was told this was one of the reasons you turned it away, not by you but by someone else, when the new tyre was fitted I questioned the condition of them, the tyre garage also informed me they would be ok. we all know the silly reason why you didn't want to do my car.
Good to see that you have taken loads of pictures to show other people not me, I have pictures too of all the bird shit that's all over the car where its been left out.
We can spend all day here and we are not going to agree, its a closed book for me, il move on and take it as a bad experience.

Any car that comes to me will always be turned away. Remember my life is more important to me than you it seems. Take a long look at yourself and think about it. Your car was not in a acceptable condition to be used hard. Hell I would even drive my car like that.

Happily retired
I was there so know the events as they happened. Mark asked me for my opinion on the wiring as I did all his looms for 8 years. Physically the ECU was one of the worst installs ive ever seen but that don't stop them working that's just a pride in your car thing. However the fact that the CDI was wired in with the ECU such bad practice is a joke really. Still it was in for mapping I believe so Mark started on his usual checks. He rang up & found out the car was on Sorn so it could not be mapped anyway. Later on he asked me too take a look at the rear tyres they had a load of cuts I assume from the wheel arches. At that point he decided to have the car removed as unsafe to map. If as it seems you think that this car was acceptable to map you will im sure find Tuners who work on this standard of car.

I didn't think it would be long before you came along and opened your big mouth rod. Firstly the car being on sorn was only a text away as it would have taken me 5 minutes online to tax. The wiring and the way the cdi was fitted, I bought it and installed it the way it was running in the last car where there wasn't an issue, I have no experience with autronic so was not to know the cdi wiring would cause interference with the loom wiring. The tyre has been fine and has passed an mot. I was willing to have these issues sorted but, mark has had a problem with me and the car from the beginning and everything has been too much trouble from the start, by far the worst tuner iv ever dealt with, rather than explain the issues with me he just said collect the car , then slated the car to people behind my back, I should of known better really with the way u talk about cars that he has in on here and on Facebook. My car came back to me stinking and covered in bird shit, not acceptable, glad he didn't do the car in the end.

The crap was there when it was collected. As u said behind my back, the car is a pile of shit so there we are, then u get big mouth rod to back you up, says it all really. A total waste of time and money from my point, and very disappointing and by far the worst person iv dealt with with 15 years of Cosworth ownership. I should have known what to expect with your whole attitude from the beginning really, you live and learn.

Not a impressive start for a car that was just meant to have leads fitted which I did and get running and then straight for mapping and the dangerous tyres. But if this is how you are happy to have your car means that I was 100% correct in sending your car away. Take a look at yourself rather than try to put blame on me for your substandard workmanship.

None of these problems were present before the ecu was fitted so now you are just adding things on, as said your a waste of space who didn't want to do the car because it has had work by a tuner who you have issues with pretty pathetic really, think u expect a 30 year old car to be without issues.

Out of sheer interest Mark would you of not been interested in going through the problems you had found on the car with Lee to try and get it all sorted and then finally mapped and done?

When I asked he said it's not that type of place! All the issues were rectified in a few hours when I had the car home, he and rod are making them about to be much worst than they are as a cover up for not wanting to do the car, it's been a total waste of time and money for me, and I'm still left with a car that's not mapped, should have stuck to my original tuner they were not afraid of fixing small issues that a 30 year old car tends to have.

Terrible advert for MAD.
10/10 for handling a situation badly, then making yourself look a tool on a forum about it
Bonus points for having Rod as your wingman, who would manage to make you look like an arsehole even if you were handing out free money

Agreed, I was quite happy to leave the whole thing as it was when I had the car back and put it down to a bad experience and move on, but he took it upon himself to slate my car to other people and tell them why he wouldn't do it, didn't give me the reason directly just told me to come collect it. I knew it wouldn't be long until rod came along spouting shit, but carry on if they want too.

The correct thing to do would be to give you a list of things to do and be humble about it if its work MAD don't want to do, as they get better value from doing other work.
To humiliate you, then snipe about you/the car behind your back is terrible form.
Was it made clear to you in advance the standard expected?
