Default Help - economic car under 10k

My Mrs needs a new car and I'm really struggling with what to get her. I'm not going to go down the brand new car route again as she does lots of miles and it's just not financially worthwhile so I need to get something second hand but it has to fit the below criteria...

I'm looking to spend a max of £10k.

She does 30k a year so it needs to be economical (60mpg plus)

As above, so it can't b anything with high mileage as it will need to be scrapped after 2 years (60k maximum on the clock)

She has always had sporty cars A5, 3 series coupe etc but destroys them (especially wheels and tyres) so was thinking of something a little more rugged

She prefers Audi, merc, BMW but with the above criteria, I suspect that might have to be a compromise.

Anybody got any suggestions? I'm really struggling to think of cars to put forward for her to look at with the above criteria.

Never thought of a civic, good shout.

I know they are good cars but if I suggested we go and have a look at some skodas, I doubt it would be warmly received

The small capacity A3's do 60mpg+, step up in class when you sit inside compared to Fords

A3 is another good shout. Are the patrols getting 60+ nowadays or is it still just the diesels. I've heard of some petrol cars getting ridiculous figures but I always gravitate towards the diesels still

Each to their own. I wouldn't want to do 30k a year in a car that has done 150k already. Things start to feel sloppy and worn out, no matter what the make of the car IMO. If you are doing that amount of miles in a car, it has to feel comfortable, safe and reliable. It's striking the balance between that and not just throwing silly amounts of cash away that I'm trying to strike.

A firm kick in the babymaker should soften her resolve to demanding BMW/AUDI/MERCS

Seat Leon FR, basically audi without the badge. Get a 63 plate for that money, £20 tax. Diesel 150/184 bhp with every option included. Easily capable of 60mpg.

My wife drives a brand new petrol Leon FR, 1.4T eco engine, on demand, 150bhp and returns 60+ mpg. Drops to 2 cylinders when cruising etc.

When you say the car "will need to be scrapped after 2 years" are you serious? Scrapped to me means you take the car to a vehicle dismantler for it to be stripped. So after 2 years and maybe 60K miles it now has no trade in or resale value?

Citroen DS3 - funky and diesels do 80mpg if you are light footed. Or a Mini Cooper (BMW of course)
