Default Rear brake balancer on 3 Door Cossie

Hi guys, hoping someone out there can help me. My 3 door was in for MOT a couple of weeks ago. It passed, but I was made aware of an issue with rear braking system. There is an inline rear brake valve/ balancer in front of the nearside rear wheel. This item is leaking slightly, and the tester said it needs replacing. I have been advised that a Ford replacement is not available, but a similar Jaguar part fits and does the job, but again does not seem to be available in the UK. I have tried a couple of Jaguar dealers in the US but neither have the part. What is the way round this problem. Any help would be appreciated.

If it's a cosworth it should have abs and therefore no bias valve
They were only fitted to non abs cars

It would seem that this problem will pop up on many Cossies in the future. Maybe a specialist engineer will look at re-furbing these!!!!

They all had them, and they all leak! the 4x4 ones were just under the abs valve block though if I remember correctly.

I have seen aftermarket ones for sale but cannot find a link at the moment sorry

They do have a pressure limiting valve inline to the rear brakes, 4x4 is attached to the valve block whereas 2wd is in the rear line at the rear of the car.

Is there any reason not to use the complete 4x4 valve body with pressure limiting valve on a 2WD car ?

Assuming the removal of the rusty 2WD valve

No it works fine, I did that on my Mondeo. As far as I recall the outer pipes going into the valve block from the master cylinder need swapping around though, you'd need to check that as its been a long time since I did it. I actually found a near new 4x4 valve block the other day and thought I'd ebay it for the concours guys.

Hi
Had my Sapphire Cosworth one leak too
I've fitted an adjustable AP racing one seams to work well
I need to move it inside the car at some point as I fitted it in a hurry underneath to enable me to carry on useing the car.
Another job for the winter
I bought it from BG developments 01527873716

Cheers Tim

yup, that bigger union i've seen on the valve block

the brake balancer is normally that bigger egg sized lump with the bar and stuff in it that's supposed to increase the braking on the rear if the vehicle is loaded and almost always causes issues (according to rsturbo owners) whenever they've just fitted rear discs or lowered the car and the answer was to split the valve open and cut the bar with a hacksaw blade

the abs always supplies a constant pressure to the rear brakes when the pedal is pressed i was lead to believe

just replace it with a bit of pipe?

unless it does indeed reduce the pressure and then opening it up and resealing it might do the trick?

I'll probably use all 4WD stuff apart from the ABS ECU.

Just curious really !

I believe it holds residual pressure in the rear line once you come off the pedal, and it is there for a good reason so replacing it with a length of pipe is hardly common sense!

The AP adjustable valve was Ł140.78 plus vat and carriage
I did manage to get 10% off as the firm I work for buys a lot from them.
Quality item

Cheers Tim

Thanks for that info Paul. Do you know which of the 2 would be required to replace the Cossie 3 Door original?. One is 2psi and the other is 10psi. I will probably buy whichever will suit as a spare. I bought the second hand one which was on E/bay recently, and might not be a long term solution. I will probably go with the Demon Tweeks item when I can be sure which to buy. Thanks again for very useful information.

Getting back to the valve I recently bought on E/bay. The valve that is fitted at present is leaking. I take it that it is always the valve itself and not the brake pipe connections at either end that leak. If it is the case that the valves leak, is there any way of encapsulating the second hand replacement to prevent that happening prior to fixing?. The valves seem to comprise of three parts which I understand should NOT be taken apart. I also understand that the joints are subjected to high pressures.

The 2 psi one is listed for disc brakes and the 10 psi for drum brakes from what I read.

So it does Paul S. I should have spotted that. As the old saying goes, it's no good getting up unless you wake up. I think that applies to me !!!!.

I know that the 2wd valve has 8.5 stamped on the body, would that be 8.5psi ? If that's the case would you have to match that if purchasing an after market one.

Thanks for that Tosh. I won't buy an aftermarket part until I am sure that it does what the original did. I will check out the pressure rating with a man that will probably know .
