Default help/ advice needed on dizzy vacuum units

ive got a Rs1600i with a gen TT conversion, only just gone back on the road after approx 15 years, it drives lovely when off boost and not too bad up to about 4 psi but after that its holding back and sounds like its missfiring or pinking

im suspecting a problem with the advance/retard unit on the dizzy,
fuel system is good and it has new injectors, fuel pump, ht leads, dizzy cap, rotor arm, ngk plugs

the dizzy itself is just a bosch unit as fitted to all the 80's cvh's like xr3i etc (0237 601 001)
the vacuum unit has no markings but looks simmilar to a saab turbo unit,

what is strange though is the vacum pipe for it is plumbed straight into the airbox, surely this should be connected to the inlet manifold so it can do the correct advance/ retard as it comes on boost etc

its been suggested that its just designed to run a static timing?

That picture is about the size of a 2p....cannot see anything.

And is it a regular vac advance unit, or a dual vac/boost diaphragm ?

Then it should see vacuum/boost from the intake manifold in order it can retard timing on boost.

Not much help but I would of thought it needs the vacuum from the manifold. I doubt it's meant to run static timing. It looks like the correct vacuum advance unit for a tt conversion. Great car by the way.
